Carseat in the FRONT SEAT?!?!

Yesterday, I was driving with LO and I saw this lady with an SUV. Her infant was in the passenger seat, up front. This seems VERY convenient to me because LO screams everytime that we put her in her seat. This has to be unsafe and illegal?!? Does anyone do this?

Re: Carseat in the FRONT SEAT?!?!

  • There is a REASON they tell you NOT to do it!

  • I think it is legal, though not advised.  I have put DD in the front of my mother's extra car at their vacation house because it is a truck and only has a front seat.  It was nice!  Obviously, the air bag has to be off.
  • How can you NOT know this is illegal.

  • According to this website for CA state law, it is illegal to ride with any child under 6 years old in the front seat.

  • Every state is different, but it does have to do with airbags.

Pick-up trucks, for example, can have car seats in the front if the airbag is disabled.

  • Though the front is not the safest place, if you can turn off the passenger airbag in the front seat it's fine to put the carseat there. Of course you might have to deal with dirty looks from strangers... I have considered it because I like driving my Mini and the carseat doesn't fit in the back. I can turn off my passenger airbag so if ever my Honda is not working I can and will put him in the front if we have to go somewhere.

  • That is a huge pet peeve of mine.  Here in Germany I see many many people doing it.  A few of my German friends said that is just how many people do it but she didn't even understand why.
  • I thought it was a little odd that she would have her infant in the front. It would make life a whole lot easier though. :)

  • It not illegal. DH has a pick-up with a small extended seat in the back. The carseat doesn't fit so it has to be in the front. It isn't as safe as the back-middle. The only thing that you have to do to be as safe as possible is turn off the front air bag. I usually drive LO in the family size SUV in the back. Having DH drive DD makes me so nervous.

Yes, pick-ups...but just for "convenience"? Come on!

  • There should be a label on the side of your seat that says the back seat is the safest place. It might be convenient to have them up front but I don't really think it's worth the risk if you have a backseat.
  • I have a friend that ALWAYS kept her infant in the front seat--until she changed to a forward facing seat and then she moved her in the back.  Makes me crazy!  It is easier but it's so much safer for them to be in the back.
  • MUD or you are just an idiot.
  • I was stating a question because I had seen this lady with HER child in the front seat, and was wondering how legal this was.  I would not put MY child in the front seat because I know it is not safe. I would appreciate not to be mocked. Thanks!

It is very legal. Not mocking.

  • I have a single cab pick-up. Where else am I going to put her?

    FYI my airbag turns off.
