those who follow eat/play/sleep routine

i read the baby whisperer while pregnant and loosely follow eat/play/sleep cycles when i'm home with DS.  he still isn't on any kind of nap schedule yet, when he sleeps depends on how long he's been up and how tired he seems, but he tends to eat every 3 hrs and the cycle goes from there.

now i'm back at work and at daycare, the daycare lady has great success with him napping so i asked her trick. she said no tricks, just soon after he finishes eating she puts him down for a nap.  so this is eat/sleep/play.  any issue with switching it up now?

Re: those who follow eat/play/sleep routine

  • Huh, this is interesting.  I never read that book but we definitely do eat/play/sleep but I think eat/sleep/play sounds better.  I'm going to try changing it up.

  • i haven't read that book, but we don't follow much of a strict routine and DS sleeps great. sometimes he goes down after playing and eats when he gets up, sometimes he falls asleep while eating and i put him down then. either way, he naps pretty well and started sleeping through the night (10+ hours) before 3 months. i believe babies should sleep when they're tired, regardless of whether it fits into a schedule or not, because the better they nap during the day the better they sleep at night.
  • I do eat/play/sleep for the most part, except when she wakes early from a nap.  But I personally think you go w/ what works.  The only real reason I didn't want to feed before sleep was because I'm breastfeeding & she was wanting to fall asleep there & stay - it did NOT work for me!  But I think if your baby goes down after eating then go w/ what works...just my opinion of course!

  • You may end up with a baby who needs to be nursed to sleep instead of learning to self soothe since you are getting close to that age.

  • we do eat-play-sleep... hoenstly she's the most fun just after she eats! All smiles and giggles! I think if you switch it up you are going to create a kid that is dependant on eating to get to sleep...
