BM supply is tanking--please help!

I usually get 70 mls every 3 hours (yes, I know even that sucks but it's enough to feed Stella for now).  I had a super busy weekend (I am a wedding florist & September is my busiest month) and didn't pump as much as I should have & my supply has taken a nose dive (have been getting like 50 mls every 3 hours; 40 mls every 2 hours).

My mom is a lactation consultant & suggested the mother's milk tea & the Fenugreek which I just picked up this evening.  I am also planning on doing some power pumping over the next few days & even waking up during the night a couple of times to pump (I usually don't).

What other recommendations do you have?  For all of you out there that recovered from this kind of thing, what worked for you & how long did it take to notice an increase?

I am committed to BF for at least a year so I really need this to work.

Thanks!

  • The mother's milk tea really helps me.  I don't have a rockstar supply either, but I average about an ounce per hour (and yes, I only pump every 3-4hrs).  Also, drink TONS of water.  My supply goes down when I get dehydrated.

  • The ONLY thing that helped me was Reglan. ?I've read about some women having side effects from it, but for me the only change I felt was a boosted milk supply. ?Good luck!

  • This is a common question on the Breastfeeding board, too, so you might want to check them out.  I found lots of good advice from the kellysmom website about breastfeeding.  There are recipes for special lactation cookies and other interesting things to try.  I hope things get better.

  • If you don't already eat oatmeal, try adding 1 - 2 big bowls a day.  I also tried Fenugreek, Mother's Milk Tea, a lactation tincture, and drinking one beer (I heard Guiness worked best) a night and I am NOT a beer drinker at all.  I was willing to try anything!
  • I did all of the above (minus reglan) and finally ended up taking domperidone which is what kept me pumping for 14 1/2 months.
  • Drink lots of water, eat oatmeal (steel cut, if you can), pump more frequently, eat more protein, and fenugreek.  I just started taking fenugreek and noticed a difference within 24 hrs.  I also tried the lactation cookies, but all they gave me was gas. lol!

  • mother's milk tea and fenugreek should help... also blessed thistle. instead of drinking beer you can actually find a supplement called "brewer's yeast" that's the good stuff in beer that can boost supply. as the other pp mentioned, loads of water and oatmeal can help too.

i did use reglan... but it was a cruel master! i had withdrawls when i tried to get off of it after just a few days. but it WORKS for sure! here's my experience with it.

  • How do you all pump with having the baby home?  While the baby is in the NICU, it is pretty easy, but I'm so scared that when he comes home (maybe next week) I will be exhaused due to feeding and pumping all the time.  I have 2 other DC at home as well. I really want to keep it up, but am worried I won't be able to.  Any suggestions?

  • I would just power pump.  I tried the mother's milk tea, and I don't think it worked... but I also didn't drink it as much as suggested... that stuff was gross!!!!!!!  Good luck!
