Is this normal??? Pumping question

After I pump, my nipple, and a small area of areola that gets "sucked" by the pump turns a medium shade of pink while the rest of my areola remains the usual shade of brown. So, my nipple/areola looks like a bullseye. This goes away after a while, but I'm not sure if it is okay for that to be happening.

Re: Is this normal??? Pumping question

  • Does it hurt or just look weird? I have a similar thing after I pump and I do think it's normal, but I had it really painfully when i was using the "softfit" breastshields from Medela. I actually found the regular personalfit rigid plastic shields to be more comfortable since they didn't pinch.

So, in short, you're applying vacuum to your nips, it's normal for the color to change, but if it hurts then you might need different breastshields.

  • I don't know if it's normal, but it happens to me, too.
  • I think this is normal.  A bit of my areola gets sucked in with my nipple when I pump and I think that is simulating what a baby does when he/she latches on the areola not just the nipple.  They get pinker than normal too.  As long as it doesn't stay discolored and isn't painful, you should be fine.

  • if you can, you might talk with an LC. some of the areola is involved, but not a huge portion. sometimes discoloration is a sign that the breast shields are the wrong size. mine were.

medela pumps only come with 1 size, but i think most other brands come with more than one. if you have them, you might try a larger shield. most pump companies have some info on their sites, but this was the only one that made any sense to me: https://www.ameda.com/breastpumping/most/fit.aspx.

  • Medela makes other size shields you can buy separately...I tried the large and the small and found out I like the medium but it has to be the hard plastic ones not the flexible ones. Google "personalfit medela".
