Nurseries and Baby Gear

When to start the nursery?

Hi Ladies,

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and wondering when it's appropriate to start buying things for the nursery (big items like furniture, rugs etc).  I don't want to jump the gun, but I want to be ready.  Six months left doesn't sound like that much time!

TIA!

Re: When to start the nursery?

  • I think that whenever you want to start decorating you should. My hubby and I waited until we found out we were having a boy... but if you are on Team Green.... then I say Go for it! :)

  • I would say if your finding out the sex to wait until then. If you really want to start though maybe start picking things out for boys and girls so as soon as you find out you are ready to order everything. Thats what I did.
  • i started the nursery at 18 weeks (right after the big U/S!).  although i ordered a few neutral things at 13 weeks.

  • I'm in the same boat you are.  I think I will start buying furniture after our next appt @ 15w3d.  The furniture will be the same no matter the sex of LO.  I don't plan on buying anything else until after our big u/s.
  • We just cleared out the baby's room and will order the furniture in a few weeks. I have bought decorations though and some clothes. We're on team green though.
  • We're holding off on the nursery for a couple of reasons:

    1) it wont' be used (aside from the closet) until bunny is roughly 6 months...if even then. We'll be bedsharing/co-sleeping in our room (not sure which, yet)

    2) the diapering station is in the second bathroom, which is set up perfectly for it.

    3) It's currently our guest room.

So we set up the play area in our formerly formal dining area - which is open to the living room. I decided to focus on that since we'll be spending the majority of our time there anyway.

If I were you, I'd take the next few weeks to research and plan so that when you do start setting it up it's all perfect and will fall into place. GL!

  • I think it depends on how much you have to do. We had a completely empty room but it is painted differently than we would like. We ordered our furniture at 14 weeks, we picked out our bedding about a week after we had our big u/s at 18 weeks and DH started painting this today. Our furniture won't be delivered until Nov so we have time to get that done and my mom bought our bedding and I will get that at my first shower.

The nursery will be done by the middle of Nov, so almost 3 months early.

  • We started early because my DH is a teacher and the summer off would make it easier. I was about 10 weeks when he did the main projects.
  • We started cleaning out the nursery at around 8 weeks, painted (neutral colors) at 16 weeks, bought furniture at around 20 weeks, and then added bedding and decor as we had our showers.

  • I ordered the furniture at 19 weeks and am glad I did since I was quoted a 10-12 week delivery time. I then started painting/decorating so I will be done before the furniture delivery date (at least have a lot done). Ideally I wanted everything finished before the baby shower so I can just unload and organize when the gifts start pouring in, spend the time after getting things I didn't get and relaxing until baby is here (plus my EDD is 4 days after Christmas so I have all that holiday fun to look forward to)
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • We started the nursery around 20 weeks.  We wanted to find out if we were having a girl or boy first.  The crib was ordered when I was 20 weeks and we still have not gotten it.  It takes 10-14 weeks to get delivered so we are hoping to have it by the end of this month.
  • I didn't start till about 27 weeks, although I had been thinking about it before then.

  • I want to have our baby room painted by the end of Oct. because it will be too cold to have the windows open to air it out any later then that. I am going neutral for everything because I have had many friends get all pink or all blue then a couple years down the line have to buy all new gender appropriate things. And if you find something you love on sale ... why turn it down?
  • Start now! Obviously if you want to wait for the gender to be more gender specific for the nursey then you can hold off on painting and accessories, but you could price out what crib you want, changing table, a rocker/glider...

Our apt wont be ready until friday sooo I will be putting that nursery together quick before LO arrives, I have all the furniture in storage and have fam coming over to paint the walls in 2 weeks.

  • Thank you ladies for all of your input!  I think I'll start with furniture after our 16 week appointment and then wait until we find out the sex to move forward with painting, bedding etc.

I appreciate your advice and wish you all the best with your LOs and their gorgeous nurseries!

  • I think it would be as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.  I started painting and buying things when I was around 20 weeks.

  • Since I'm the 'handy' one, I didn't want to be putting together a crib at 8+ months.  We're doing gender neutral bedding.  We bought the crib, dresser, and recliner a couple weeks ago (in case ordering was needed).  My mom's coming tomorrow to help me re-organize the man cave and sewing room into one and paint the empty room, then we can start bringing the furniture in.  Once that's done, I plan to wait a little while before we buy the bedding and decorations (or at least until I put it all out)
