Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If you pump when away from your baby

how many ounces do you get each time?

I work full-time and pump three times a day and try to nurse three times as well.  Since my second day back to work I don't seem to be getting enough milk.  I need 18 ounces total for the next day and I never seem to make it.

If you pump when you're away from your baby, do you get enough in one session for one feeding?

I've been trying everything I can to increase my supply but it doesn't seem to be working.

Re: If you pump when away from your baby

  • I do not get enough when I pump. DD is currently eating about 12 ounches at day care, and I'm only able to pump about 9-10 usually. Unfortunately (for me, not knocking FF babies), we're sending a bottle of formula to day care every day and then any BM that's left goes in the freezer.

So yeah, I'm right where you are. Then again, I haven't been working my_ass off to increase my supply, so maybe I should just do that.

  • I haven't been getting enough while I'm at work to make up for the next day but I pump one more time before I go to bed to make up for it. I'm also eating oatmeal every morning, drinking mothers milk tea during the day, and trying really hard to stay hydrated. Do you look at pictures of LO while you're pumping? That is supposed to help too.

I do everything you've mentioned and nada.  it sucks!

  • So wait, is this a low supply issue or just the fact that we're pumping?

  • I get between 5-6 oz per session while I'm at work (I get about 12 at the first morning pump). I try to pump every three hours, because that's how often he eats. Right now I pump 7 times a day. I pump for a few minutes more after the milk flow stops (so usually 15-20 minutes total) and that seems to have helped me produce a little more.

  • I think its pumping, because when I was home I always had an oversupply issue. And Ro doesn't seem to go hungry on my days off. I think even w/ the best pumps, nothing is going to be as efficient as our babies.  Do you have enough energy to do one extra at night? R STTN so I know I'll still have plenty of milk by the time he wakes up.

  • I can only pump twice at work and it seems like it goes up and down through the week. Yesterday at work I pumped 8 oz and then 7 oz, today only 5 oz.

I pump in the morning what is left after DS eats and the same at night. I also pump on weekends on top of bfing, so that gives me a little reserve. I am drinking mother's milk tea and water like there is no tomorrow to keep it up.

  • The first pump of the morning at work I get anywhere from 7-10 oz.  Then around lunch I get 6-8, and in the afternoon I get 6-8.  I come home with 20 oz every day.  DS nurses in the morning, in the afternoon when we get home, and before bed.  I pump one more time about 2 hours after his bedtime feeding, and usually get around 5 oz then.  I also let the pump go for a little longer after the milk is done flowing to hopefully encourage more production, or at least to maintain the same level of production.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • I get about 12-13 oz in a 9 hour day. I find that if you massage the breast from top to nipple you can help it out. Also, thinking about your baby helps too. I started pumping when I was on maternity leave so I could get my body used to it. Try pumping after feedings as well as in the morning. I will pump after feedings when I am home.

  • DS eats 14-18oz/day while I'm at work.  I pump 2-3x at work and each session produces 4-7oz total from both side.  I usually take home around 14-16oz and if I'm short for the week I make up for it on the weekend or at night before bed. Somehow, I'm always a day or 2 ahead.

  • I am having the same problem. DS gets plenty when he breastfeeds at home, but I can't get enough at work. Sucks.
