Babies: 0 - 3 Months

this is what the dr suggested re: change in sleeping patterns...

Before I read here about the 3 month growth-spurt, I put a call in to my Lulu's pediatrician b/c i was afraid she was either coming down with something or starting the teething process.  So I explained to him that she used to sleep for about 4-6 hrs at a time at night but now she is sleeping between 1 - 3.  He said "now is the time to start sleep training".  That she should not be waking up in the middle of the night to eat anymore.  When I asked him how long I should let her cry he said "until she goes back to sleep.  Some babies can cry for about 10 minutes, some babies are stubborn and will cry for up to an hour - but let her cry until she falls asleep".

Really?

  • time for a new pedi.
  • There are all kinds of theories on CIO vs. non CIO. I say "whatever" to all the "studies" and do what YOU feel is right. DS would whine a bit sometimes but I knew he was fine so I left him to fall asleep and now he has no problems going to bed and putting himself back to sleep in the night. If he was actually CRYING I would get him and snuggle him till he calmed down a bit. A bunch of people are going to tell you to switch pedi's ASAP, but I doubt its necessary unless you feel uncomfortable w/ other things they are telling you. And the dr. wont get pissed if you make a different decision. I did at one point and the dr. told me that I made the right call for our family.

  • ya think?

then when I told him I'm considering doing any sleep training in the play pen in my room b/c her and her brother share a room -  he said to put a screen around her playpen so that she'll feel like she is in her own space - if she sees me she's going to keep crying.

Does he really think that I'll be able to listen to her cry for up to an hr and not comfort her? oy vay!

  • Is he suggesting that you not comfort her at all? My pedi said that it was OK to go in and comfort at intervals as long as I didn't pick him up every time.
  • Personally, I am not a fan of the "cry it out" theory. I know a lot of dr's suggest it, and a lot of people do it. It's the advice almost everyone I know is giving me. I just smile and nod, and keep my mouth shut. However, I don't judge anyone who does it b/c I can completely relate to the feeling you have in the middle of the night when you are sleep deprived and will do almost anything to get a good night's sleep. If you don't get any sleep you can't properly take care of LO during the day.

I just bought the book "The No Cry Sleep Solution," so I'll see what that recommends.

You have to use your judgment with any pedi. I don't agree with mine on everything they say, but they have given me some solutions that have worked, so I'm okay with them for now.

  • I just don't know.  With my first, I didn't CIO completely - I would let him cry for maybe 5 minutes and then go in and comfort him and when he calmed down put him back down.  He was also older then 3 months - like around 5 or 6 months.  He also had the room to himself ya know what I mean?  I'm really confused.  I don't wanna up and change their dr b/c he said something that i don't agree with - but then again he doesn't really give me any suggestions to concerns of mine that I EVER  agree with.

    I'm confused!

Then you should change, no question about it.
