Sigh... name dilemma

Morning everyone!

So, for a long time now, I have always wanted to name my daughter if I had one Olivia.  Finally, I am having a girl, and guess what?  Olivia was the #6 most popular name in the U.S. in 2008 and #1 in Michigan where I live.  I am not a big fan of super popular names and trendy (which I guess it isn't trendy) so I'm not sure what to do.  I still really like the name, but I also don't her to be one of the five Olivia's in her class.

What would you ladies do?

Oh- FYI- DH really likes the name as well, and has no problem with its popluarity.

  • Who cares if it is popular or trendy?!  If you love the name, use it :)

  • Don't let this bother you!

My nephew is named Ethan, and they knew perfectly well how popular it was, but went ahead and gave him that name anyway. They both loved it and it suits him.

So go for it! Its a really pretty name

  • I agree.  Use it if you like it.   There are pros and cons of using a trendy name or an uncommon name and what matters is if you love the name and want to give it to your child.
  • I would use it anyways.  I live in MI as well and I don't know anyone who named their baby girl Olivia.  If that's the name you've always loved, I'd say use it.

  • If you love it use it, who cares. It's what makes you happy that matters. Another option is using it as a middle name.

  • It is a beautiful, timeless name.  I could honestly care less what people think, how popular it is, etc.  My DD is pretty, smart and sweet (not that I'm biased or anything) - exactly what I always pictured an Olivia to beWink

  • If you both like it, stick with it. But I am kind of like that too. I love unusual and not so popular names (but Sparrow for a boy is a little redic!) Anyway, go with what feels right, or, pick out another name and wait until you see that squishy face to name her. My friend did that and it worked out great!
  • Love the name - it's on our top five list, too! I say go for it even if it is a popular name!
  • I personally couldn't use a name that was overly popular. I would be afraid of my child being stuck with Olivia B. for all of her school years.

JMO. I'm a little annoyed that my oldest son's name is picking up in popularity, actually.

  • My favorite name for years was Isabella, and now it's the second most popular girl name in the country, so I dropped it. I don't want my kid to have the same name as lots of other girls her age. I had the same problem when I was in school, and it was annoying.
