Not for basketball...for delivering babies - he he.
We toured UNC two weeks ago and are touring Duke on Thursday night. From there we will be picking a new OB practice.
Any feedback on either the hospitals or the affiliated practices? Pro's, con's, etc?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Duke vs. UNC?
I'm pretty sure SMS delivered at Duke and may be delivering there again so maybe she can help?
If I remember correctly at Duke I think SMS said you can't send the baby to the nursery? This was from waaaaay back so I may be making that up. Not sure about UNC.
Off the top of my head I'm not sure who has delivered at UNC.
I delivered DD at Duke and have a scheduled c-section there for our 2nd. I go to Duke Women's Associates. They have offices in Chapel Hill and Briar Creek. The one in CH won't be forever... they will be moving to an office on 15/501 right near 40. Let me know if you would like their contact information. There are several Drs in the group and I really like them all.
While I have no experience at UNC I'd imagine the experience would be similar to that at Duke since both are teaching hospitals.
Duke feels like they need to send you home ready to care for your baby and while sleep is important it is also important that you take care of your baby and ask any questions you have before you leave.
The 2nd night we were at Duke DD did go to the nursery for a few hours so we could get some sleep. They were not very busy and the nurse suggested we let her take DD for a few hours. You can beg and they will take the baby but it isn't really the norm there. So for the most part the baby is in your room with you.
I'd be curious how many people with the option to send their baby to the nursery actually do it.
Sorry I wasn't questioning it but for some reason that conversation has always been stuck in my mind because I feel like there was some debate about it however like I said that was a long time ago
Never thought you were questioning it... sorry if my reply came off that way. I would be curious to know though how many moms send their baby to the nursery.
To be honest... you are never going to find a hospital where everyone had a great experience. Several moms in the playgroup I go to delivered at Duke and had great experiences.
I think it is more important that you find a group of Drs that you are comfortable with. I don't think you really can go wrong with either hospital but not being happy with your Drs would be a real problem.
This is true. I personally had a wonderful experience at my hospital and my opinion would come off pretty biased sounding like Lee's just did. MrsLee has always just had great experiences with everything UNC so of course that is always her recommendation.
SMS and her friends like Duke and I like my hospital.
Truthfully they are all good and I've even heard great things about Rex so you will be fine wherever you deliver.

My OB Practice was Chapel Hill OBGYN and they were WONDERFUL. They actually deliver at Durham Regional which is operated by Duke. Everyone at Durham Regional was great (I was there for 36 hours of labor and then another 5 days from a c-section..). The only problem is that their recovery rooms are tiny.
I wanted to go completely natural and everyone respected my decision. It didn't go quite as I wanted it to go and no one was rude or had an 'i told you so' attitude. We also wanted Samantha in our room and they were for the most part very understanding. They would even do her tests in the room.
Since it is likely that I'll end up with another c-section, and we are moving, I probably won't be going back there. 5 days in a tiny room was enough to drive DH and I nuts. The nursing staff is really nice and super friendly. I would recomend both Chapel Hill OBGYN (<--- Amazing practice!!) and Durham Regional to any one.

I delivered at UNC, and I'd say my experience was ok. My issue was wait time for appointments (usually 1-2 hours for the doctor to spend less than 5 minutes with me) and I had a pretty crappy room after delivery. But b/c UNC and Duke are both public, teaching hospitals, I imagine that they are probably similar in those aspects.
One thing I loved is that UNC is becoming a very "baby friendly" hospital. This means a lot of great changes for a delivering woman- I had a c/s but did not have to have my arms strapped down, my baby was under 5 lbs and I had GD, but b/c she did fine on her APGAR they did not automatically take her to the NICU. She got to stay with me during recovery, they were very supportive of me nursing as soon as I was stitched up, and even taking her away for a bath/pictures was optional for me.
