Preemies

Do you ever wonder where the line is between wanting the best for your preemie

and pushing them too hard?

I sometimes think that my preemie-mom guilt makes me too focused on "closing the gap".

I want LO home so bad, but I don't want them (the doctors) to push her too hard either.  Sigh.  She had her first transfusion yesterday.  For some reason the IV part upset me the most.  I can't believe she's been there for almost a month already.  She's doing great, I just want this whole hospital thing to be over.

  • Yes. I feel like it's a fine line.
With development stuff, you don't want them to hate you, but you need them to work.

Robbie struggled with weight forever and we pushed on calories, calories calories.. then all of a sudden he gained TOO much, and I felt bad like I'd done the wrong thing again.

I think some of that is normal mom stuff- the mommy guilt. But then you add in the health issues that come with a preemie and it all seems even MORE imp't.

  • For now I really just put my faith in my doctor and nurses.  He is the best in the area and I know he knows better than I.  When they get home I will be working with a post partum developmental group to help me make the choices.

It is hard though!  I just want to bundle these guys, feed them bottles and get them home.  I know in my heart that slow progress is best... even if it is killing me.

  • I can imagine that I will be that way with milestones down the road.  In the NICU my daughter could not gain weight and I tried so hard trying to force feed her so she could come home.  She ended up burning too many calories working so hard at it and on the NG tube.  I felt like I failed and set her back even more.
