TTC After a Loss

Those of you taking extra Folic....

Just wondering if those of you who are taking extra Folic Acid, in addtion to your prenatal vitamin, how much are you taking 800 mcg or 400 mcg?

Just trying to get my head around what I need to add. And can it hurt to take too much?

Thanks for your thoughts.  My head hurts trying to understand everything I'm supposed to do sometimes.  :)

  • I think 800 is the recommened does for pregnant women in general, so you'll need atleast that.  And yes, it can hurt to have too much.  Your doc should be able to tell you what they suggest for your case.

  • Actually, I think that folic acid is water soluble, so if you take too much, you just pee it out.

    Mine is 600mcg

That's in addition to a prenatal?

My prenatal has 800 mcg...and I picked up a bottle of 800 mcg.  I'm trying to figure out if I should cut it in half or not.

I was diagnosed with 1 copy MTHFR, and I heard you need extra folic.  So that's what I'm trying to sort out.  I will ask my Dr. about a prescription or advice on it, but I won't see him until the 25th and I wanted to get a leg up.

  • Call your doc if you cant see him until the 25th.  I think theres several MTHFR mutations so there might be more then one tx.  This is what wiki says on overdosage (Leah's right, it is water soluable):

[edit] Health risk of too much folic acid

The risk of toxicity from folic acid is low.[67] The Institute of Medicine has established a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for folate of 1 mg for adult men and women, and a UL of 800 ?g for pregnant and lactating (breast-feeding) women less than 18 years of age. Supplemental folic acid should not exceed the UL to prevent folic acid from masking symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.[68]

Research suggests high levels of folic acid can interfere with some antimalarial treatments.[69]

A 10,000-patient study at Tufts University in 2007 concluded that excess folic acid worsens the effects of B12 deficiency and in fact may affect the absorption of B12.

  • Thanks for the research, emma.
  • I am taking Folgard which is a combo of folic acid, B6, and B12. ?I think it is 1000 mcg folic acid but am not totally sure as it has been awhile since I've been on it.

  • I take Fabb tablets by prescription, so that amounts to 4,400 mcg extra folic acid per day (each tab is 2.2 mg), on top of my prenatal.

Your body will get rid of excess folic acid. You don't need to worry about taking too much.

Yep it is in addtion to my prenatals. There is 800mcg in my PN's and 600mcg seperatly. After I had a my D&C follow up, my OB told me to take more folic acid. I specifically asked more than what was in my PN and he said yes.

Exactly this.  I also take Fabb tablets (see siggy) twice a day in addition to my prenatal vitamin, so I'm getting 4,400mcg from the Fabb tabs and 800mcg from my prenatal for a total of 5,200 a day.  I know it's a lot, but since folic acid is water soluable any extra that your body doesn't use you will pee out.  We need way more due to MTHFR.

    Hope that helps!

  • My dr. has me on 4 mg in addition to the 800 mcg in my PNV. I take 2 mg in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and the PNV at night (otherwise I throw it up). If you take it all at one time, you'll loose most of it when you pee.
