How long did you wait?

My FI and I just got engaged, we are planning to start TTC  right after the wedding. How long were you out of work and how much did you have saved to be out of mork for that long? Sorry if TMI

Re: How long did you wait?

  • I had unexpected pregnancy complications and was put on bedrest at 20 weeks....so I was out of work for 23 weeks and had to go back to work 6 weeks postpartum.

I would wait to try to get pregnant until you have enough in savings to cover at least the duration of your pregnancy if you are unable to work for whatever reason.

DH and I were able to pay our bills okay, but it definitely took a huge hit on us financially.

We were married on November 8th and concieved J a couple weeks later....if I had known I would be put on bedrest we would have waited a few months to save up.

  • he is sooo cute!!! do you think that 4 months worth of paychecks is enough??? We have enough to pay all of our bills, put some away for savings and still a little left over. We got very lucky and our parents are paying for most of the wedding

  • I was out of work for 6 weeks but had vacation days to cover most of it. I also made sure I had enough money to cover 3-4 months just in case something happened. I'm glad I did because i didn't end up using it on maternity leave but to help for a down payment on a house. It never hurts to save.

  • We also TTCed right away.  I was out for 8 wks but all paid through STD and PTO.  I was at my job long enough to qualify for those benefits.  We also had over 1/5th of my gross salary saved up by that point and also were about to receive a big windfall in terms of bonus when I returned to work so that helped a lot.

  • I was out of work for 6 weeks - I had a c/s, so I could have been out for 8 weeks...my maternity leave was paid, so we didn't have to save up extra.  If you DO have to save, and your maternity leave isn't paid, I suppose you should save what you would have made working OR just budget appropriately to make sure all expenses are covered...keep in mind that in the beginning, the baby goes to the doctor's a few times and there are a lot of little things that can creep up that you don't even think of.  GL and congrats on the wedding.
  • i would also consider finding a STD plan. i was threatened with and put on bedrest several times during my pregnancy, starting at 20w. a STD plan will really help alleviate some of the anxiety in that case!

2 K for medical. In our plan we don't really pay anything for prenatal visits, but I do pay a % of lab stuff (and there is lab stuff each trimester), and 20% for labor and delivery. L&D costs and OB costs should be between $1,200-$1,500.

I just want to add that L&D costs could be much more.  I had a normal L&D apart from being induced (which lead to a long labor).  I also paid 20% for L&D and the total was just over $6,000 out of pocket.  Make sure you know your insurance policy up & down and budget more than you think you'll need.  GL!
