Embarrassing question re: tearing/stitches

Ok this is super embarrassing so I apologize in advance but I've chickened out from asking my dr. in person so thought I'd start here.

It is my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong) that it is quite common/normal to tear a little and not require an episiotomy and you just get a few stitches. Well, do you still "stretch out" down there even with the stitches? I thought I read a post long ago about some douchebag husband who requested his wife be stitched up tighter than she even was before - is that even possible? The reason why I ask (and the embarrssing part) is that DH is very (ahem) well endowed in the girth department. To the point where sex has always been a bit uncomfortable for me and we used to joke years ago that it will (hopefully) be a different story after I have kids. So if you do tear a little do Dr.'s try to sew you up to a pre-birth state and I need to have a conversation with my dr. or am I being a complete moron and you're going to stretch no matter what. Thanks for humoring me =)

  • Yes, you will stretch no matter what. Just don't do the Kegels afterward to pull everything back together.

  • Yes, you will stretch.
  • Small hole.  Big baby.

    There will be stretching.

  • I have bad news for you, lol.  I had similar hopes for my post-birth state (more comfortable sex), and I healed up exactly the same.  I had a second degree tear.  You dr will stitch you up as far as you've torn.  Even without stitches, your body would want to heal back to it's original state, I think.  The stitches just help hold the torn edges together for healing to occur.

But, now that you ask, I am curious....  Would a dr maybe leave out a stitch or two, at your request, to leave a little more "room?"  I nominate you to ask your OB and report back!

  • Inside I am slightly looser according to DH, but on the outside things are a little bit tighter - I can even tell by appearance.  I had a 3rd degree tear though.

Even if you stretch out though, it's meant to shrink back in time.  I'm only 3 months out...I've heard it can take several months.  I know that's not what you want to hear.  Maybe it won't stretch back for you. ;)

Right.  Over time, I went right back to the same as before, if not a little tighter (as noted during sex).  If anything, it's possible to have a little scar tissue that limits "stretch" later.  I actually asked my OB about that at my one year appointment, because sex seemed more painful at times.  He says no scarring -- well healed, but...

  • there is a difference between stretching the skin of the perineum (outside) and stretching the vaginal canal (inside).  both will stretch and will go back to normal size, most times.  and you SHOULD do kegels to improve blood flow to the area and help healing...doing kegels won't make your vagina shrink to a smaller size than it was before.  i have a background in women's health PT so if you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

    hope this helps!
