Pumping ?

ds eats (bf's) every 2 hrs.. how can I also pump to build a supply??? i really only have 1 hr 20 mins between feedings because it takes him about 40 minutes to eat... i'm worried about pumping too soon to his feeding time, and not having enough milk for him..

Re: Pumping ?

  • You want to build up your supply, not stash?  Well, for me pumping wasn't the thing that did it...  at this stage you'd kill yourself if you tried to add more onto your already crazy schedule...  as soon as I started eating rolled oats it doubled.  I still have to supliment, but I am doing better than I was.

  • I really didn't start pumping a supply until she was about a month old and slept more at night.  When she sleeps for 5 hours at night, I wake up and feed her with one side and pump the other.  Also, during the day, if she take a 3-4 hour nap, I will pump the side she was supposed to eat and feed her the other side when she wakes up.  But I couldn't start pumping until she was sleeping longer time periods....just give it time!!!

  • Pick one time during the day and pump (I recommend sometime in the morning).  He's still pretty young, so I wouldn't worry too much yet unless you are going back to work in 2 weeks.  I started pumping at 3 weeks and didn't really start building a stash until 5-6 weeks and still had a big stash when I went back to work at 8 weeks.

  • You don't really need to Pump right now.  I would give yourself a few more weeks to recover.  If he is BF'ing every 2 hours your supply will be ample.  But if you want to have some on reserve just do it right after (if your hubby can rock him to sleep instead).  Just pump for say 7 mins each side (you might not get anything at all).  You will need to freeze this milk since you aren't bottle feeding yet (right?  It's not suggested usually because of nipple confusion).  Soon he will be able to sleep for longer periods of time and this will not be an issue.
