Did your RE say no air travel for up to 3 months after your BFP?

I am getting started with IVF and doing my 1 month of monitoring now. Well, I called to see where they think things with fall for me in terms of IVF because we have a family vacation planned.

As it stands now vacation is in the first week in Dec and if all goes well, we will have our BFP by the end of November (thanksgiving week)! So, the coordinator said they do not allow travel during the first 3 months of being pg.

Did your RE say this? If so, did you follow it? Or was it just a suggestion from them.

Mine did not restrict me, but I have heard of others who have been told the same thing.

I've never heard of a logical reason not to travel in the first 6 months of pregnancy without an identified problem.

This is gonna sound awful but if something bad happens (heaven forbid) there's not really anything that can be done to save the pregnancy at that point.

Did you ask them why this is their rule?

And to answer your question - neither my RE or my OB had that rule.

I transferred the weekend of Thanksgiving and flew 3 hours from Colorado to Florida that Christmas.

No mine didn't say that. At my first post BFP appt last week I specifically asked my RE about two trips I have planned- one across country and one overseas and she said both were fine. They only told me I couldn't travel for the two weeks between the BFP and my first u/s in order to rule out ectopic pg. I've generally heard (though internet searches) that air travel is fine up until one month before due date.

I never had any travel restrictions ... Just in the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy my OB said to stay within 100 miles of the hospital.

Hmmm, no. My OB told me I shouldn't travel by air past 26 weeks because of the off chance of going into labor on the plane (although I know many doctors okay plane travel up till 8 months), but I didn' t have any travel restrictions for early pregnancy. I did IUI though, not IVF, so I'm not sure if that plays into it somehow.

Yeah I did ask why and she said that they want to prevent anything from happening and that the embryos are being hand placed there and they want to limit any risk to me or the baby if I am pg.

It sounded strange to me as well, since I have been pg before with IUI and they had no issues with me traveling at all.

I traveled by plane at 10w, 17w, and 20w. My Ob had no problem with it. I never checked in with my RE since I had already "graduated". I'm not sure why air travel would be off limits?

My RE did not forbid but did suggest to not travel by air in the first tri if possible. She said she understands that you might have to for work, but she would recommend avoiding it if you can. Her reasoning is that if something were to happen, then she does not want you in the air - not because she thinks air travel will cause anything to happen. She knows this is unrealistic in a lot of situations because many of her patients travel by air to see her for their treatments!

I was with my OB at the time I got pregnant (break cycle). She let me fly from Louisville to Honolulu at 9 weeks. I'm not sure if that's the norm, but it turned out fine.

Wha???? I could imagine not wanting you to travel within the 2ww, but by what... 8weeks? there is an umbillical cord connecting the baby to the placenta. It's not going to fall out for goodness sake! That sounds really silly.

I flew 8 days after my positive beta. I have certainly heard of not flying at the end of your pg, but I've not heard of it being restricted early on. My only warning would be regarding possible morning sickness while in flight....

I traveled from Philadelphia to San Francisco by plane at 13 days after ER/ 8 days after ET. My RE said if I didn't feel well I would have to cancel my trip, but I felt fine. I had my beta done while I was in California, found out I was pregnant, and flew home at 4w6d. At 5w I had my first ultrasound and found both embryos had stuck-- so the trip clearly didn't have a negative effect on things.

Frankly, I think if you have a trip planned, you should take it. The odds are that everything will be just fine. If you have OHSS or something and feel like garbage, don't go, but I feel like that should go without saying!

I traveled at 7 weeks. RE was ok with me flying. He just told me to walk around the plane and drink a lot of water. (it was a 6 hour flight)

I flew when I was 10 weeks pregnant and my OB had no issues with it at all. They only thing he said was if the flight was going to be longer than 2 hours, make sure I got up and walked around like at least every 90 minutes. Thas all!

mine is restricting travel during the 1st trimester. however, a little less than 2 weeks ago, at my last appt., i shared w/him about my father being in/out of ICU. he told me that if i really needed to, i could fly home to be w/my family (a little more than an hour flight). he preferred that over a 14 hour drive home. luckily, dad has come back out and should be released later this week, so i don't have to risk anything w/travel.

ETA: the reason they gave was the stress/strain of the seat belt in the event of turbulence, as well as the stress that air travel puts on the body (whether you feel it or not).

i tend to travel 50% of the time w/work, so i had to make significant changes at work and reassign certain trips to others to accomodate this requirement.

Our RE said that if I had no a) bleeding or b) cramping, that it was fine to travel. I did end up having bleeding (subchorionic hematoma), so I haven't traveled since my BFP. If you do end up deciding to travel, refundable tickets probably aren't a bad idea...

We had no restrictions... OB and RE both assured me it was fine to fly... we flew from Cincinnati to Denver when I was 8 weeks along.
