Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleeping...anyone else want a shot at this?

I never slept more than 7 hours BEFORE DS was born unless I'd had a really late night. I am used to getting up around 5am for work anyway about 3 days a week and work 12 hour shifts. So when people complain that they aren't getting more than 5 or 6 hours of sleep I just don't get it. Your body will adjust, you are an adult. 8 hours might be ideal but this isn't the norm. I do NOT consider DS waking up at 5 AM to be a "middle of the night" feeding. If he actually sleeps from 11 or 12 until that time I consider myself LUCKY. I know it's hard to be running on so little sleep but one of three things will happen A) it will get better or B) your body really will get used to this or C) you'll attempt to sleep train around 6 months and hope it works.

Anyone else in the same situation or feel the same way?

  • So what is it?  You don't get it when people complain about getting 5 or 6 hours of sleep or you know it's hard to be running on so little sleep?

  • Im like you however... I do know there are people like us that can function on just 8 hours but i know there are people that need at least 10-12 everyone is different
  • some people just need more sleep than others. 5 may be enough for you to get by, but for someone else that is way too little.  I've always needed a lot of sleep or I feel like a zombie.

  • yup, I am nurse as well & a night owl. 5 or 6 hours  would be great, I am only getting 2 or 3. L eats at 12, 3 & 6...if we could drop that 3 am feed I would be laughing! We stay in bed & snuggle after the 6am feed, but I do not consider that a nightime feed, nethier does L because he tends to switch to his 2 & 1/2 hr schedule and eat again between 8 & 8:30 then we are up for the day.

  • I know it's very possible to function on just 5 hours of sleep...

More would be nice...but ya do what ya gotta do.

  • Uh...good for you.  Your body may only need 5 hours of sleep, but I function much better on 8.  And telling a bunch of tired women that they have no reason to be tired (which may not be what you're trying to say, but that's how it came across) isn't going to go over well, IMO.
  • I know how hard it is to be getting 2 or 3 hours so I think I'm lucky to get 5 or 6. People are certainly entitled to complain either way, just wondering if anyone else runs on this amount of sleep and manages to function. I know there are some out there that wish for that amount. It's definitely one of those days where the STTN postings are getting a little repetitive, that's all.
  • This is pre-baby, but once I started sleeping 8 hours a night, I was sick a lot less often. Its healthy for your body to be well rested and for most of us 5-6 hours is not well rested. With DD, I did find that after a few weeks, I got used to less sleep. That doesn't mean that I like it, but I'm a mom and I signed up for gig.

  • If Lo would go from midnight to 6am, that would be great, but she doesn't.

What screws me up is when one night I get 6hrs, the next I get 4hr, and I'm all over the place.

You definitely have a reason to be tired. Even people that function on 5 hours can be tired. An infant can wear you out. I didn't mean to come across that way, I just meant that some people would consider themselves lucky to get that much. My LO had terrible reflux that made our nights pretty bad. We all have something that has kept us up or still does.

Definitely sorry it came across that way.

This sucked for us too when it was happening, sometimes still does. We're all much happier when it doesn't.

  • This post annoys me.  OP, you're lucky my DD needs me right now.  ::side eye::

  • I'm one of those people that can sleep 4 hours and do just fine. However, I understand that not everyone is like me. There are some people that need at least 8 hours of sleep to function. Diversity is beautiful. I think you are comign off a bit harsh here. Not everyone can adjust so quickly.

Maybe I do need more than 5 hours of sleep because those are some mixed messages. Vent turned to confusing rant. I can see how this would garner some side eye.

  • I'm not back-peddalling, but I am going to apologize for coming off like a_bitch. Sorry for being so harsh.
  • I would kill to be getting 5 or 6 hours of straight sleep. KILL.
