3rd Trimester

Breastfeeding?

Consider investing stock in breast pads! Seriously, I registered for 1 box, which was gone about 10 days after getting home, and it's only getting worse (or better, depending on how you look at it).

Also, if your boobs are gi-normous like mine (I was a 36DD before BFP, and anywhere from a 38G to infinity now) what came in handy for me the first few days when I was really engorged were the tank tops with built in shelf bras. My nursing bra was way too tight and constricting to wear, and the built in bra lets me have a place to put the pads as well as offering a slight modicum of decency in public!

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

Re: Breastfeeding?

  • Good to know! Thanks for sharing. Any kind of breast pads in particular. I've registered for Madela.

  • Have you tried the reusable breast pads?  You can machine wash them.  That's what I bought.  Haven't used them yet though.
  • Honestly, they're really all alike to me so far, but I def. like the Medela lanolin better. It's smoother...the Lansinoh is kind of sticky/gunky.

  • How many are in a box?  I registered for 12 washables, if I need more than that then I'll just switch to socks or something :)

Thanks for the advice.  How is BFing going for you?

  •   Thanks for the tip...I've been wondering about this as well!
  • BFing is going great. I was a little worried b/c I had a c-section, so I couldn't nurse until 4 hours after delivery, and it can take longer for milk to come in, but DS apparently was a born sucker.

We introduced a paci just before 2 weeks b/c he likes to suck so much he would be done nursing and just lay there with my nipple in his mouth, and sometimes after a day of heavy use I kind of have to retrain his latch, but other than that he's perfect!

Don't give up, and try to be as relaxed as possible about it. And make sure you see the LC's in the hospital and nurse in front of them...they will help with the latching.

  • This is just my experience/ $.02 worth

But buy disposables for those first few weeks. You will leak A LOT.  Well, maybe not if you are lucky. But 12 pads would NOT last long. I had to change mine every few feedings.  I'd go through 3-4 sets each day at a minimum, so 12 would barely get through 1 day.  Plus most washable ones I'd soak right through as they just don't absorb much during the heavy engorgement period.

They are great after the first couple weeks, but have at least 1-2 boxes of disposable ones on hand.
