Pumping, do you spray?

Sorry if this is too much info, but I'm wondering if my breastshields are the wrong size because my milk doesn't spray unless I am squeezing my breasts.  Should they spray on their own?

Re: Pumping, do you spray?

  • I only sprayed when I was engorged.  No worries.  As long as your nipples are comfortable, your breastshields are the right size.

  • When you say spray, do you mean it doesn't come out at all unless you squeeze or it just doesn't shoot out forcefully unless you squeeze?

My milk will spray most of the time while I'm pumping.  When I get the breast almost empty it gets less forceful though.

You shouldn't have to squeeze to get the milk to come out while you're pumping though.  Massaging can help to get the flow going at the beginning or between let downs, but you shouldn't have to do it constantly.

  • It does come out without squeezing, but just trickling.  But when I squeeze I get a lot more quantity because it sprays.  I'm squeezing constantly and getting tired because I pump for at least 15 minutes.  I tried going down one size in the breastshield but only did it for one day b/c it was hurting.  It didn't spray then either though...not sure if it's something I need to give it more than a day to get used to...

Everyone says I need to relax to get my milk supply up, and it's hard to relax when I'm constantly squeezing... :(

  • Maybe go up a size.  I read on kellymom that that sometimes increases flow.
  • Only if my boobies are really full.  They are the correct size if the sides of your nipple are NOT touching the inside of the tube.  I don't think the shield can be too big, just too small.
