2nd Trimester

Inspired by the confessions....

I've read a lot of the confessions about what people can and cannot have during pregnancy and I just wanted to share my doc's do's and don'ts list...

Things that are ok: Tylenol, Sudafed, Robitussin, Tums, Rolaids, Miralax, Claritin

Things that are not ok: Pepto Bismol, Ibuprofen, hot tubs, saunas, tanning beds, alcoholic beverages, and recreational drugs.

That's it. That is the list. There have never been any talks about caffeine or lunch meat.

What about you? Have your fears come from the bump, or did your doctor give you instructions about things to avoid?

Re: Inspired by the confessions....

  • Personally, I've learned to ignore most things on the bump about what people say they "can't" have....if you took everything to heart that was said on the bump you could drive yourself crazy.

  • I was given a pamphlet of the basic: what seafood to avoid, OTC medicines that are ok, reasons to be concerned.  I think most of my warnings of what not to do from What to expect when you're expecting
  • I specifically asked my Dr. about lunch meat & soft cheeses & he said no. Soft cheeses & listeria thing, lunch meat & the nitrates in them. MIL was a L&D nurse as well as a NICU nurse for several years & said she saw a big difference in babies whose mom's had caffeine vs those who hadn't. So, I personally chose to limit my caffeine to 1-2 times a week plus I've read its recommended to only have 200mg/day.

  • My doctor gave me a list of things to avoid, including alcohol, lunch meat, hot dogs, soft cheese, sushi, ibuprophen, pepto, and to limit caffeine to 200mg per day.  I have to say that I have had a few hot dogs and some lunch meat, and I may have exceeded the caffeine limit a couple of times.   Oddly enough, my doctor told me to stay away from Rolaids, but that Tums are okay.

  • Most of my instructions from my doctor have been physical and reminding me that I cannot eat the way I did prepregnancy, only that last one is more of a standing don't eat that little ever again type thing.

I wouldn't say I am very fearful of all the food stuff.  Yes, I had read about them but I figure even 60 years ago they probably didn't know about not eating lunch meat or sleeping on the left side or any of that and yet we managed to produce babies and continue a new generation.

Quite frankly I think most of the fears are over reacting.  The human race has survived how many years now?  Honestly, of all the time we have been on the planet I highly doubt women knew half the crap they know about pregnancy today and yet the human race is still here.  We aren't as delicate as we are making ourselves out to be and I am unwilling to make myself miserable for 9 months to feed into the madness.

  • My doctor actually has never talked to me about what is safe to eat and what to avoid.  I knew going into pregnancy that I would not be able to enjoy my rainbow sushi rolls and alcohol, but I was genuinely surprised by all the foods we are supposed to stay away from.  That's kind of why I started the confessions thread.  There's some "rules" I break because I simply don't believe it's a danger to me.  I believe in moderation.  I'm not going to deny myself blue cheese on my salad, but I also don't eat it everyday.

  • My OB told me no raw sushi, one soda a day,  he said that he didn't think that listeria outbreaks from lunch meat were any kind of epidemic but if I wanted to steer clear of it that's fine..No unpasturized stuff..no high mercury fish... but otherwise most things in moderation.

He also said that while he didn't condone drinking a lot that a glass of wine or a beer once in awhile after the first trimester was over wasn't going to hurt anything... so I've pretty much saved that for special occasions.

  • They mentioned lunch meat - recommended buying packaged from a reputable vendor.  Warm up hot dogs.  Caffeine is fine in moderation (at least my first kid lived through a pop a day while in the womb).

The only way I've changed my diet is dropping from 3 bottles of pop a day to 1 or less.

  • I had three rules to follow...

    1.  Drink 12 glasses of water a day

    2. Exercise regularly (This privileged was taken away from me when my BP shot up and I'm still sad about it)

    3.  Don't drink or take up recreational drugs

As for food, I was just told no raw meats and avoid soft cheeses.  No mention of lunch meat, so I didn't ask.

  • My doctor basically said everything in moderation.  So, not tuna fish every day, but once a week is ok.  Lunch meat is fine as long as it is fresh and from a reputable place.  No raw meat or fish and no unpasturized stuff.  She didn't say anything about caffeine, but I don't drink coffee or soda anyway(occasionally tea), so that's not a big deal to me.
  • My OB/GYN has lists posted right on the pregnancy homepage of their website.  So convenient.  As for the soft cheeses thing, just read the labels -- soft cheese is fine, as long as it's pasteurized, and most that you can find in American grocery stores are pasteurized.  I suspect that lunch meat that's in a package, like Oscar Mayer, is probably safe, and that it's just the meat from actual deli counters that runs the listeria risk.  That's just my opinion, though.  I probably eat too much canned tuna.

I've skipped alcohol so far, but New Year's Eve and my birthday might be the nights I break that rule and have a champagne or a Guinness.  Please, the Europeans have had daily wine with their pregnancies, and their kids are fine....  I dropped my caffeine intake way down (hard to do as a nightshifter!), but I still drink some.  My DH makes a MEAN pot of joe, so I have a half-mug of that, then non-caffeine beverages until my midnight or 1 am cup at work.  I just try to be mindful of my total daily consumption.

My OB actually told me the exact opposite - she said to avoid packaged deli meat - but that fresh sliced meats from the deli are safe to eat. I crave turkey sandwiches and look forward to my occasional visit to my local delicatessen for a turkey and avocado sandwich!

  • all i have is a medication list.  everything else is a case by case basis.

for instance:  if you're having a lot of BH, lay off the caffeine and go heavy on the water.  with DS, i was told to drink 2-3L of water a day.  and i did.  i'm trying to again, but water makes me nauseous, so i'm going with gatorade.

honest to God, they told me this time since i've had so much m/s:  "eat what tastes good, and i don't care what you drink as long as it's not a margararita or something.  even if you don't gain a single pound, the baby will take all the nutrients it needs."

people on here are a leeeeeeettle nutty.

This is almost exactly what my doc told me, minus the weight thing. Eat and drink what you can, when you can.

Yeah you're right we're not that delicate but the reality is, is that some women get sick and some babies die. Medical professionals have spent time, money and energy researching this and have found statistically significant links. (I haven't seen the stats but I don't think for a second my government spent mooney on "good eating advice in pregnancy" brochures just for fun).

Say it's one baby in 1000 that dies. It's not a huge risk but if it was your baby it would matter.

My mother also made a good point which is that when she was pregnant here, in NZ, we didn't have soft cheeses or half the processed meats and we sure didn't have sald bars and convenience foods like we do today. people made and ate fresh food at home. So yes our parents didn't know the risk but quite possibly their risks were less.

Anyhow...everyone has to make their own choice about what is right for their own diet. I just know why I make the choices I do.

  • My doctor didn't tell me not to eat/drink anything (other than alcohol obviously).
