Cribs for petite ladies?

I'd posted before about drop-side vs. stationary cribs - my husband and I are still fairly clueless about this.  We have a huge height differential (I'm 5'1" and he's 6'4"!) and we need a crib that doesn't kill one or both of us.  We realized that less than drop-side vs. no, that the highest mattress setting actually made the biggest difference (i.e. highest mattress was easiest for both of us to place baby into)  Unfortunately, there's a limited number of cribs on display at any given time at BRU/Target, etc, and we can't tell the mattress heights based on the crib dimensions.

Any petite ladies have recommendations for cribs that they've liked?

Re: Cribs for petite ladies?

  • I consider myself petite (5'3") and we have a stationary, convertible crib.  Since we lowered the mattress about one month ago it is definitely more difficult for me to put DD in and take her out.

That being said, I am still happy with our crib.

Have you considered using some kind of step stool?

  • I am not petite but I feel like our crib is lower than others, maybe becuase it is not a drop side and it's more modern.  Starndard mattresses I think range from 4-6" so I would just be aware of what you buy for the crib you get.

I am 5'8" and it comes to below my baby bump.  It is 35" tall and the space from the mattress to the top is 12" on the highest setting.  I am thinking we may need to lower the mattress already beucase my mobile hangs very low over it (but that may just be the mobile).

  • I am 5'3" as well and also went for a Baby's Dream crib with a drop gate (that's the kind with the hinged side that folds, not a drop side which IMO requires more coordination than I have wide awake, let alone half asleep). Hubby has no problem using it with the gate up, but when baby sitting my nephew I would have pulled something trying to lift his year old self over the side.

I highly recommend a drop gate for shorter mamas.

  • I am petite (5'2") and have a stationary converitble crib.  It is on the lowest setting for DS and I am just now having slight difficulty with putting him down since my bump in now starting to get in the way.  Before now, I have had no issues with it.  We have the heritage collection from Creations.

  • A note: there's a safety warning about the gates...as child gets older, they can use the cross beam as a step thereby getting themselves up and out easier.
  • Thats so funny that you posted this. I am 5'2 and we went to look for furniture yesterday and was having a really hard time reaching in the crib. Not sure if it is because of my stomach getting bigger and me being further away or my height.. I am going to say a combination of both.  The woman at the store said that most cribs are designed for women 5'0 and above.  If you are shorter then that.. then you can go with a different kind of crib, but you should be ok with most other cribs.  At some point, your baby will be helping you by standing and give you some give..At first.. the mattress will be up pretty high for you to reach the baby.
