XP: Sciatica pain so bad I can't walk!

I have pain shooting down from my lower back, down my left buttock and leg.  It is so bad I can barely put any weight on my left side.  I will call my doc first thing in the morning to see if there is anything I can do.  In the meantime I wanted to know if any of you has had this and what helped.  I have been in tears for two days now, this is just awful!!!  THANKS!

  • STRETCHING. I cant explain the stretches, but maybe you could google sciatica stretches? Also ice to keep down the inflammation. And I second pp...chiropractor, for sure!

  • Hang out on your hands and knees for awhile, or in a position on your knees with your butt in the air and resting your elbows on the floor. I forget what the position is called. Gets the baby to reposition if he's on the nerve.

  • I too agree with the chiro.

But for tonight, run up to the store if you don't already have a hand held massager and let hubby go work.  First, take a nice warm bath. Then get some of those icy hot patches and put them around where it hurts.

Mine was so bad, it ripped my skin.  Seriously.  I have lupus so I have a joint problems and skin issues, so putting the two together really stinks.

When hubby was overseas for work for a week, I got the massager and it did wonders.  He normally would rub me til' I fell asleep.

  • I FEEL YOUR PAIN....or rather, I felt your pain, which is good news for you.

Two weeks ago I was just like you. My butt hurt but it was just a sore feeling, very tolerable. Then it worsened practically overnight. It was intense and I would yell when the sharp pain came. It hurt to squat to pee, to walk, to sit, to basically do anything other than laying down. I described it to my husband as an electric shock type of pain that ran down from my butt to my knee. He suggested we get in the shower and he massage my butt while the hot water ran down my back. We did this and not only was it relaxing but it did help a little. Then I would lay down on the bed and he took my left leg and stretched it out ever so gently. He also massaged my butt and leg while in bed.

The next day, I still had the pain but it had decreased dramatically. I went ahead and put a heating pad on it anyway. I don't know if my baby had moved or if all of those massaging techniques went away but it went away fairly quickly. Within 3 days I had no more soreness or pain whatsoever and today I am as good as new. So just remember that this isn't permanent! Honestly, if it has lasted more than 5 days, I probably would've gone to the chiropractor but thankfully I didn't have to resort to that.

I hope you feel better! I know it's no fun at all.

  • I had it so bad I was also in tears. ?I got a pregnancy massage with concentration on the sciatic nerve & glutes. ?I did end up getting some bad bruising from the massage, but it went away in a day or 2 and I've felt so much better since then. ?I tried the chiropractor 3 x's a week for months with little to no relief. ?

A heating pad helps. ?Also, try standing & rotating your hips and walking around slowly if possible.?

  • Relax it!  Put your legs up and let the nerve heal.  It is probably really inflammed.  Walking on it is not going to make it feel better.  Maybe a little bit of stretching.  Also have DH do some serious butt massaging.  Sometimes that can help relieve some pain.

  • Go to a physical therapist or a chiropractor (that has experience with pregnant women).  P.T. helped me SO MUCH.

  • I get it too, I see and acupuncturist/shiatsu therapist and he does some massage. Try getting DH to rub your bum, sounds silly, I know, but once he find the spot, it will hurt, have him to pressure on it off and on, few seconds on, few seconds off. I find its a hard area to stretch but this helps a lot.
  • Talk to your doctor about physical therapy. It helps so much. Until then, Take a warm bath and lay down on the couch or the bed prop your feet up on a pillow. Also having your husband massage the area will help too. I hope you feel better soon.
