Help - newborn - baby bites while latching

Hi all,

Just had my baby yesterday, so we're totally new at this, and there are no lactation consultants available.  When I try to get her to latch she clamps down VERY hard.  She does the same thing with a finger.  What do I do?

  • Try sticking the bottom (pad) of your finger to the top of her mouth. On her pallet. Have you tried a pacifier for a little bit? Are you waiting for her to cry when she's hungry? Try to feed her early so she's not aggrivated with being hungry and she'll be more relaxed. Try checking out this website for some advice

  • She is not latching right, obvisouly. Don't let her destroy your nipple...it will happen within a few feedings and you will suffer for days. How long until you can see an LC? Does it hurt the whole time or does she do it mid-feed? If it is mid-feed, unlatch her with your finger and get her back on correctly.
  • i am from the twin cities area also and sounds like you need help from a lactation consultant. la leche league is definetely available in the twin cities and they are free.
  • We had this problem...sounds like you have to get a little more breast in there rather than just all nipple.  Don't be afraid to just shove it right in there!
