Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

When will your DC move to a big boy/girl bed?

We're thinking of moving Jared into his new room at Christmas time. I wanted it to be enough time before baby #2 arrives. We'll probably go straight to a twin bed (a day bed, actually - there happens to be be an extra one in the fam). Friends of ours also skipped the toddler bed & it worked out great. Think we're pushing it on his age?

  • I think it really just depends on the kid. I'm leaving A in the crib as long as I can, only because the thought of her being able to tool around as she sees fit, in the middle of the night, scares the bejeebus out of me.

    Ditto!

My child is insane and the thought of her not being contained sends chills up my spine. DevilWink

  • Coleman was out of the crib and into a real bed (the top bunk, mind you!) well before he turned 2.  (Probably about 20 months)  Once he was able to crawl out of the crib there was no use in having it.  We've had a few rough nights but overall he's the best sleeper ever and rarely wakes up during the night.
Shelby is 7, Coleman is 5!

  • I'm with Meg. We moved Gage to a twin bed at about 20 months because he kept climbing out of the crib. I had purchased a 2nd crib because my kiddos are 19 months apart. We only used both cribs for about a month and a half. He'll be fine.
  • I have no idea when we'll move C. When she learns to climb out maybe?

I think though, I will do a mattress on the floor before I actually put her in a bed. She moves a ton in her sleep. I guess I want her closer to the floor while we figure out how a bed works out for her.

  • Our crib's front comes off for the "toddler" bed (not really what I'd call a toddler bed though) so once I get her room cleaned up so there is nothing she can get into in the middle of the night, we're taking the front off.  After the holidays (and holiday company), we'll probably move her to her new room and have her start on the full mattress on the floor.

She's 16 months now and hasn't shown interest in getting out of her crib but I want her settled in her new room before #2 comes so the nursery (and crib) is ready.  Katelin will be around 23 months when the baby is due.

  • We are planning on keeping G in his crib until he is closer to 3 yrs old. The main reason being is his room is upstairs and I'm scared of the thought of him getting up and falling down the stairs. We are just going to buy another crib for #2.
  • We have been trying to keep him in the crib for as long as possible, but I fear I am going ot have to convert sooner than later.  He almost climbed out of the crib a few times already.  We tried the crib tent, and he got that off (I still can't figure out how LOL)  but that stopped him from trying for a little bit.  He has been starting at it again.

Our crib also converts pretty easy, basically take the front off  as well  so we are probably going to do that soon.  We keep his room door closed, a gate at the steps and a camera in his room so I think we will be ok when we do change him over.

  • We are moving DD next month to a full sized bed (also just because it's free and already in the house) - she will be exactly 2.5 years old.  I always said I'd move her when she climbed out of her crib, but she never did and she loves to sleep so I never felt like rocking the boat!  Now DD #2 will be born in Jan and we'll need the crib for her so that's how we decided to move DD #1 to a big girl bed.
  • We moved Brenna the weekend of her 3rd birthday.  She never once tried to climb out of her crib so we kept her in there until 3.  Since #2 is on the way we figured that was a good time to start her transition into a big girl room.  She's in a twin bed and the first couple of nights were a little different for her but she got used to it very quickly.  We made a big deal of her new room, she got new furniture and bedding and got to help us paint... she still talks about her room! LOL!
  • We didn't move Noah to a toddler bed until a few weeks after his 3rd birthday.  He never tried to climb out of his crib (in fact we always left the drop side down) so we just left him there.

We got him a toddler bed because I just wasn't ready to do his 'big boy' room yet.  The toddler bed was only $80 (and free shipping) so it's great for now.  When we do his 'big boy' room I will get him the twin, new furniture, paint, etc.  I'm lazy.
