Dallas Zoo or Ft. Worth Zoo

I have always heard the Ft. Worth Zoo is much better than the Dallas zoo.  We are planning on taking DS to the zoo when  my mom comes in October.  He will be 13 months old then.  We live out in Rockwall so the Ft. Worth zoo is a long haul.  At that age do you really think it makes a difference which zoo we go to?  We are willing to drive, but just curious what others thought.  Also does anyone know if there are coupons or discount tickets sold anywhere?  The zoo is expensive!!!  I know the Ft. Worth zoo does 1/2 price Wednesdays, but we won't be able to go on that day because we will be in San Antonio and they are leaving the next Wednesday to go home.  TIA.

Re: Dallas Zoo or Ft. Worth Zoo

  • Honestly I have been to both and I personally LOVE the Dallas Zoo!! They have a really neat African Zoo part that has a moneral you can ride which my son loves that. Its much better then the train in the ft worth zoo.  ( I think ) Also the Dallas zoo has a cool water splash area and nice size kid area. You can also ride poney's and they have a whole petting zoo area set up as well. You can get the times when they do feeding ect. Although I will say the area outside the Dallas zoo is very gettho but when you park your on the zoo property so you and your car will be fine. I know last month they were doing 1 days at the Dallas zoo but not sure if they have anything like that going on again? Hope this helps.

  • Fort Worth - hands down.
  • The Ft. Worth Zoo is better - but the Dallas Zoo is fun esp for a 13 mos. old!  We like it very much and actually joined it b/c my DD loves the Children's zoo area so much. These are the only discounts I know about (I'd call to make sure they are still vaild):

AAA members get 30% off admission
Ride Dart and get $3 off admission on Mondays and Tuesdays

Do you mind telling me how much a zoo membership is?  They didn't have prices on their website when I looked.  A lot of stuff is under construction.  Thanks for the discounts.  I will call and find out.

  • I would say the Dallas zoo for toddlers as well b/c the children's zoo is much better IMO. I've been to both in the past 6 months with DS and I was really impressed with the improvements that have been made at the Dallas zoo.
  • You know, everyone always told me 'the Dallas zoo sucks' ... so I never went, until a GTG last March (I think?).  I always went to the the Ft Worth zoo, which is really nice, and has great exhibits.  However, it's laid out really weird, and theres always a lot of back tracking involved IMO, which is not so cool with small children.

I was really pleasently suprised with the Dallas zoo when I went for the GTG.  Its not all squeezed together the way the Ft Worth zoo feels, so while the exhibits may not be as nice, or pretty ... its a LOT easier to navigate (especially with a stroller ... or especially with LOTS of people with LOTS of strollers).  The childrens area is also GREAT ... lots of hands on areas, and a great playground and water area  :)

So, I guess my answer is, they're both great for different reasons, lol.  However, I think for kids, the Dallas Zoo is just a little friendlier.  HTH!

  • I have to agree that for a toddler, I think I would head to the Dallas Zoo.  They have really improved it a lot.  Ft Worth seems to have nicer exhibits, but the Dallas Zoo isn't too bad, either.  I think you would be fine with either.
  • Thanks everyone! Dallas zoo it is!
  • Here is the link with the current prices...  We have already been enough times to pay for it.  And, next year the new area will open so it will be even bigger and I think the Aquarium (part of the zoo membership) will re-open in 2010 too so it is totally worth it for us.
