Can I ask what camera you have? I'm thinking of investing in a decent DSLR and taking a photography class. Considering what I spend on pro pics in a year, it will be a worthwhile investment:)
Hey! sure! I think it's most definitely worth the investment - I won't pay anyone to take pictures of Andrew! :-)
I have a Canon Rebel XTi. I LOVE love love it. I dont' know how much research you've done, but the best advice I've ever heard was to put your money into good lenses, not into the camera body. I mean, if you can afford an expensive camera body AND good lenses, that's great, but if you have to cut back don't cut back on the lenses!
I think the Canon Rebel XTi has been replaced by the XSi. I don't know how the prices have changed but I think my XTi was about $450. You might consider buying the XTi - since there's a newer version it's probably cheaper and you probably won't notice the difference. (I don't even know what the differences are.)
Do not buy the camera body with the lens that sometimes come with the camera - it's not a great lens. Instead, buy the body online, and then pick out your own lens. I'd recommend a 50mm f1.8 fixed lens. That's what I use 99% of the time.
I learned by reading books. I HIGHLY recommend reading a book called "understanding exposure". I took a photography class at our local arts center here in Indy, but, I already learned everything from that book that I needed to know!
Thanks so much! I have an (non-digital) SLR and I took a few photography classes in college, but I don't know anything about digital photography so I feel like I'm starting all over. I have a decent point and shoot camera (its a Canon Powershot and we paid almost $400 for it) but it has the same issue as my $200 tiny Powershot - you can't get a decent picture if the subject is moving. And 99% of all pictures I take are of a moving child (and I don't foresee getitng him to sit still for another 6 years or so).
My dad has the Canon Rebel which takes great pictures and he just uses it as a point and shoot.
Also your siggy is beautiful! Did you take that picture?
Nope I paid for that one! Luckily, we have a friend that is a pro-photographer and he'll come take pictures for me when ever I ask for a very low cost. He's no Shey Marin but he's good - especially at taking pictures of motion.
oh! Yeah - point and shoots are great for some situations (love our little Canon Elph, although I lost it this week, crap) - but they totally suck for moving children, indoors, low-light, etc.
The Canon Rebels are GREAT cameras - can't beat the price. He might even let you borrow some lenses to try, which would be a definite selling point to buy Canon!
:-)
It sounds like you probably know more than I do, it's just a matter of picking out a camera! GL!!
Thanks! I think I'm going to buy it as a Christmas present to myself! I need a hobby, anyway - I get so wrapped up in being mom/student/worker bee that I tend to forget to ever do stuff just for me.
No, I just know Shey back from my days on theknot...we both had destination weddings in 2006 and then we were both on the HI Nest Board (where all the former DW brides go on thenest). But I love her photography - its very ethereal. And now she lives right by me!
I love the pictures she did of Marino! I just got back the full gallery from her and I keep obsessing over what to get. I posted a link to the slideshow on my blog.
beautiful! without question I love the 3 at the end of him looking out a window. I love the 2nd one of that series - the one in which you can see his hands and he has a toy in his right hand and he's kind of look up over his left shoulder. You NEED an enlargement of that picture!!!
The pictures of the 2 of you in the chair are super cute too!

very very cool!
Shey is amazing - is she famous around these boards? I know her from my local IN board. She just moved though.
Oh! I see the connection. Her wedding pictures are gorgeous!

Thanks! I love the one you pointed it out, too - that one is going to be on my wall at work!
My favorite is the last one where we're looking at each other smiling...it's very "us." She did a great job with them, considering Marino was cranky!
