Do you use cloth wipes?

OOPS! Meant to post this on EFF, but maybe some of y'all have suggestions:

I am so confused about wipes solutions! So far, we've been using plain water in a squirt bottle, but sometimes it's not enough for the poopsplosions (btw, that's my new favorite word). I've been googling and see a lot of websites with homemade recipes (like with evoo, water and baby wash), but others (gmd) that say that even those irritate baby's skin and you should buy BumGenius' spray or some other pre-made solution.

I would really prefer to make my own at home, and I would really like to use this solution in my wipe warmer (it's in a perfect place next to the changing table and I think it would be so convenient/comfy to use!).

What do you use/suggest? Any suggestions for using the wipe warmer?

Re: Do you use cloth wipes?

  • Some people use soft wash cloths with warm water?

  • I just use the Basic Wipe Solution from this site.
  • I use water and a drop of baby wash -- it's in my peri bottle from the hospital on the changing table.  What kind of cloth wipes are you using?  We have some that are double sided flannel and terry cloth and others that are just cheap baby wash cloths.  I find that the double sided ones are great for cleaning off big messes - terry gets off the mess and the flannel size gets any leftovers.  They are big too 8x8 so that helps.  The baby wash cloths are not that useful IMO - they are thin and not that absorbent (of either our wash "solution" or the poosplosion).

  • I use a water in a spray bottle.  If that doesn't cut it (occasionally with my 21 month-oldl.. hasn't happened with babis yet) I use a dab of grapeseed oil on the washcloth.

I have a dozen flannel ones and I sewed some that are flannel on one side and terry cloth on the other. I do have some baby washcloths, too for when I run out of the flannel and flannel/terry ones.

  • We're currently using both but I try to use the washcloths to get used to it.  We're easing slowly into the whole cloth wipes and cloth diapers thing, lol.  I have the BumGenius bottom spray stuff.  I just spray that on Noah and wipe!  I kind of want the washcloths pre-moistened so I need to get something to keep them in with probably just water.  I feel like that would make it a little easier, in addition to the spray.

  • I use cheap Gerber washcloths and a spray bottle with a solution of water, babywash, aloe gel, and tea tree oil. They work so much better than disposable wipes it's insane.

  • I just use cotton balls and water.

  • I just use plain old water.  I keep one of those travel wipes container filled with about 10 prewet ones.
