So, I`m on the fence about switching to CD's. We've been doing the Jillians Drawer trial. We like the BG 3.0's and the Organics. I think we are gonna get about 12 of each. BUT, I`m concerned that they aren't going to fit him forever. I can't see how they would fit him when he is bigger. Do they really fit your older babies? I`m worried they'll be too tight on him.
Also, we still have leaks with him on the inside of his thighs. Could there be a reason for this?
Re: Convince me to CD.
At 20 months, and 95th percentile for height, the BG 3.0 OS still fit just fine. At different times they're proportioned differently, so you'll need to adjust the sizing accordingly to help w/leaks, but they really do work the whole time.
I recently bought a week's worth of disposables to take on a trip and was appalled at the expense. (That's a big part of why I CD.)
I was on the fence too about switching to CDing. It just seemed like way too much work to me. But I figured I'd give it a go with my second child. Once I started really reading up on it and taking notes I couldn't wait to try, so I decided to start CDing DS at 18 months. We did all one size and size larges. Larges are still too big on him if he did wear diapers still. So one size was all we got once we got started. Our favorites for that age were BG 3.0s (didn't have organics until he got too big) and Haute Pockets. FuzziBuns in size medium were our runner up. Anyway, the rise got too small on DS at around 24 months but he is in the 99% for height. They worked perfectly fine still at that point I just felt bad for making him have plumber butt all the time.
Anyway, we have now been CDing for 9 months and I just love it. My DD has had no rashes, we've saved tons of money, I now hate the grity harsh feelings of diaposables, and my son potty trained in less than 2 weeks at age 26 months. Plus, I'm not gonna lie, the pure cuteness of it is well, to die for!
hmmmm... the leaking at the thighs could be that you need to go down a setting on the rise. We had DS in the largest setting for a little while, but after a few leaks, switched back to the middle setting, and we've been fine.
I LOVE our CDs compared to disposables. (we have several types of CDs) We never have blowouts in cloth, and he actually seems more comfy in them. I think he is already letting me know when he needs to be changed, so I am optimistic that he will potty learn early on. I also think that disposable diaper pails smell way worse than our cloth set-up.
I have calculated that we save $18 dollars a week over sposies. If you multiply that by a year, that is over $900/year! Plus fewer trips to the grocery store and the trash dump!
I was super apprehensive about going fulltime with CDs during our Jillian's trial. I loved BG organic and the sized FB, but sent all the rest back. I ordered more FBs and found a great night diaper (with a hemp insert on top of the FB insert), but not so great during the day because they are so bulky. I shopped around and tried several more diapers and combos and found what works for us. I have BG OC AIOS and Bottombumpers for day, and FBs for night. All the diapers are in Medium and are still on the middle snap setting and wrap very tight. DD is 25 lb and almost 30 in tall. I really think they will last until she PLs.
I am tempted to try some better fitteds and covers than what Jillians offered in the trial...hello leaky. I use Bummis flushable liners, and found a great wash routine that requires little effort. My apprehension is gone, and I only wish we would have started CDs way earlier than 10 months. I love them. No rash, no blowouts, no more wrapping DD's bum in scratchy paper and plastic. I will start CDing at NB with the next DC. Sposies are super frustrating in comparison.
