I chipped one of my teeth about 10 years ago during cheerleading practice. I had it fixed(cosmetic dentistry) and it was no big deal. Dental work obviously doesn't have a lifetime guarantee and I suppose I'm lucky it has lasted this long. I was chewing a piece of gum earlier and the ?fake? part of my tooth popped out. I immediately began to cry because it is the tooth that is on the left side of one of my front 2 teeth. My husband said he ?wouldn?t have noticed it had I not pointed it out?, but I certainly notice!
My question is: I can?t(obviously) have any type of anesthetic at the dentist?s office. So?do you think they can just ?glue? it back on? Or do something temporary for the sake of cosmetics? I know, it may sound petty, but I feel that teeth are important!! I wouldn't care nearly as much if it weren't in the front. Has anyone else had dental issues while pregnant? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Dental Work?
I had a similar thing happen last week. ?They DON't us any numbing meds for this procedure (nothing touches the gum and the teeth have no nerves).?
That said you CAN have dental work done during pregnancy. ?They suggest waiting till after the first trimester if possible. ?I've had root canals done with each of my pregnancies... my teeth become horrid while pregnant.
I'm having to have another done with this pregnancy and am waiting till 15 weeks.?
Why can't you have anesthetic? I haven't heard this. Talk to your dentist about your options. You may not even need any, especially if you are just getting bonding work done. I am sure he/she has treated a lot of pregnant women and knows what is all right.
Sorry I just had to make a comment...my OCD. But I am a dental hygienist and teeth most certainly do have nerves. There are 3 layers of the tooth, Enamel, Dentin and pulp. The outer layer (enamel) doesn't have any nerves, but the dentin and pulp most certainly do. That is why root canals are so painful, and most fillings involve local anesthetic.
But that being said, if it is just a small portion of the tooth, chances are the dentist can file to tooth a little more and put resin on the tooth. Shouldn't be a very big deal. Dentists try to stay away from local anesthetics while pregnant, but the amount you get is so minuscule that it wouldn't normally hurt anything. If LA was so bad for the baby, why would they give you an epidural? Same exact thing, different part of the body. Just thought I would put that out there :-) But good luck, and call your dentist, he should know what to do!
No problem...I'm OCD too (or so I'm told!) HaHa
Thank you for your advice!!
If the tooth is not sensitive to hot or cold then most likely you will to need to be numb. All the dentist will need to do is roughen the edge of the tooth where the chip is (as long as there is no decay that has formed). Then from there all there they will place the resin filling back in and polish. There is no problem with anes during pregnancy, as long as you let them know so that they can use the proper kind for you. One of their main concerns is for you laying on your back reclined back during the procedure and your comfort. And they will not be able to put the same piece back on, although that would be nice
Good luck
