Anyone else have to change carseat (brands?)

I heard from another MoM whose babies came home at 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 lbs (roughly) that she had to buy a different temporary carseat(not a car bed). Snugrides only have 2 different shoulder strap height adjustments and even the baby over 5 lbs. didn't fit properly. She bought a different carseat (not a car bed), that had 4 different adjustments and recommended waiting to take the snugrides out of the box, but I really wanted to get them installed and inspected before we had the babies!  I wondered if anyone here ran into that problem?

  • We ran into this same problem. Even after they met the weight requirements they weren't tall enough to properly fit the shoulder straps even on the lowest setting. Luckily our hospital has a car seat rental program where you can use a loaner Chicco infant seat as long as you need until the babies can fit your seat. I'm so glad we could do this because it would have been a real hardship for us to go out and buy two brand new infant seats when we already had two. You might check and see if your hospital has a similar program. It only took a couple weeks before they were big enough to fit our seats properly. It was a pain to remove our seats and install the loaners but if the babies don't fit safely you don't have much choice.

  • We didn't. The hospital said that putting wrapped up blankets between the neck thingys  and wedged on each side of them. (mine were 5lb3oz and 3lb13oz) They said that seeing as we wouldn't really be taking them all over till they were bigger, that it was OK. However, they to do a carseat test to make sure that the baby can properly sit and breathe and all that.
  • That's what happened to us. They gave us a list of seats with shorter strap height options. We went to Walmart and bought the cheapest one. Mason used it for two weeks. Wyatt used it for one week, just home and then once to the pedi. Then they fit in their Graco Safeseats. We knew we wouldn't continue using those cheap seats: they didn't even snap into our Graco double stroller. So I don't regret going ahead and getting our other seats out and set up.

eta: My boys were 6 lbs 10 ounces and 6 lbs 6 ounces at birth, so I was really surprised we had a problem with the seats!

  • We were able to use our snugrides and they were both under 5lbs. when they came home.

  • My daughter was born at 5lbs 7oz and was down to 5 when we took her home.  The carseat straps (a Graco Snugride) were not as tight on her as I would have liked them to be.  Although the hospital did test her in the carseat, and approved her in it.  Luckily we only had a 10 min drive home.  Until she was a month old, she was only in her carseat when she was going to the dr, which was only a 5 minute drive.
