I'd like to find a longies pattern that is knit in the flat. I think I'd feel more comfortable starting with a flat pattern vs. round. I'm very much a newb at this.

Do any of you have suggestions? Pretty please?
i'm with you - i would LOVE it if there was one too cuz i'm scared to try knitting in the round. altho i have round needles and should just try it already! i'm more scared of double pointed needles.

Who needs DPNs?
You SHOULD try them- see if you like that method. But, many people love magic loop so much that they never do small diameter knitting with anything else- and there are those like me, who prefer knitting across two sets of circulars to achieve the same thing. Just don't let a fear of DPNs stop you- you can knit anything at all, and never use them.
magic loop is great! Rarely pull out my DPN anymore. Get the skacel lace needles, especially for small sizes - spendy but well worth it.
i have GOT to learn magic loop or dual circ methods - i HAAAAATE dpns with a true passion that is reserved for few things in life. oh i will use them but i will NOT be happy about it that's for sure. dh came over to look at what i was doing once and i was knitting with dpns and he backed away and said it looked dangerous lol..
I love DPNs because it's an easy way to keep track of where I am in a row (more useful when knitting some kind of pattern than plain ol' longies). Once you've figured out how to start a project on them, they're easy-peasy!
Glad, I know you're good at sewing, so maybe the seaming doesn't seem so bad, but it really is hard for beginners since the techniques are not really sewing techniques (like mattress stitch). I'd suggest trying to knit with two circs instead of dpns. You just slide the cords around then, and you can make the knitted circle as small as you like.

Good to know! This makes it a wee bit less daunting, I have to say.
I really, really, really, REALLY want to have a new project to work on during our drive to Vegas next week. I have all this gorgeous yarn (::swoon::), and am itching to make something other than a rectangle. lol
This is the pattern I use. I have never tried knitting in the round...
I tried this once but honestly I really didn't like the way it looked in the end because it didn't allow for DD's butt! I was a newbie and at first didn't realize it was knit flat, and I immediately knew what the issue would be. I much prefer knitting in the round as well.

I LOVE DPNs. They're not scary at all once you start using them. You only use two at once, the rest are just hanging out looking cool. I can do magic loop or 2 circs, but it makes me really really pissy.

Re: Knitters, help please.
Knitting in the round is so much easier than you think. This is the pattern I'm working on.

And nearly no seaming!
Seriously... knitting in the round (even as a newbie!) will be MUCH less of a headache than seaming up flat-knit longies.
I don't think I've ever seen any flat-knit longies. Though, I'm sure, somewhere this is a pattern.
And no seaming!
OP, I'm sorry I don't have a pattern to help you, although most patterns can be altered fairly easily.

Confession: DPNs scare the bejeepers out of me.
