Do you do anything to the water before you mix it with the formula? I am thinking of starting to use formula over the next week and would like to see what people do. thanks[Poll]
We get ours out of the fridge. (We have a water thingy and ice maker) but our pedi recommended that we not give him tap water because of the amounts of flouride in it.
Before we left the hospital an when we went to our dr.. They all said that no matter what type of water you use they really recommend you boiling it first... So thats what we do.
We only use prepared formula. Our lactation consultant, who was a NICU nurse, said that there is a risk of menangitis under 3 months from powder becuase it isn't sterilized. Not sure if it's true or not, but we figured we wouldn't risk it.
Like pp said, powder isn't sterilized, so babies that have been in NICU are especially recommended to use readytofeed OR concentrate. We use concentrate and use well water! Well water IS safe as long as it is safe for babies/consumption. We have an RO system. Our health nurse (and the pamphlets on formula feeding) recommend that we boil water and then cool before first use (and that's no matter what type of water used). They also recommend boiling all bottles, etc. until babies are around the 3 - 4 month age (when they start putting everything in their mouths). So that's what we do.
Re: clicky poll: for formula feeders, do you...
This.
And to the PP, I didn't think well water was safe for babies? I could be wrong, but I thought that's what I heard?
We purchased a home-distiller, and use distilled water. This is because our municipality fluoridates the water.
When we travel, I bring bottled water or boil and let it cool.
well water isnt safe, i dont think...?!
