2nd Trimester

If you are getting the H1N1 shot...

are you going to wait until it comes out to get both that and the regular flu shot or will you go for the regular one now and the H1N1 mid-October when it's available?

I was going to wait but just saw a doctor saying that you should get the flu shot now since it's available and then the other when that comes out.  Guess I'll call my doctor today and call for the girls and see if their pedi has it in yet.

They also said that if this H1N1 thing is like other pandemics it may peak early and the availability of the shot may be too late for a lot of people.  But, on the bright side it works so well the doctor said it will be one shot and not two.

I'm extra nervous about the whole thing with being pregnant, having a 3 year old in pre-school for the first time, and a 16 month old at home.

Re: If you are getting the H1N1 shot...

  • My work gives us free flu shots but not until November.  I haven't decided what to do yet.  Sorry, I am not much help.

  • I am not sure if I am planning on getting the H1N1 shot, but I did go to my OB this week and got the flu shot (she recommends both shots), but she did say that she recommends waiting a month or so between each shot. Good luck.

Ooh that is good to know... thanks!  I'll call today then so I can get us all in for the regular flu shot.
  • I am going to get my flu shot Monday. I know its not recommended to get more than one shot at a time. They do that with kids but its the combination of the shots together that cause the problems...

  • I'm definitely going to get the flu shot.  I'm going to ask my OB next week about the H1N1 shot.  I guess if she wants me to get it, I will.  Not real thrilled about it, but I work with little kids that are always sick, so I probably should.
  • Im getting the flu shot today
  • I got the seasonal flu shot this week and will get the H1N1 shot when it comes out.  I was advised that you are supposed to wait 3 to 4 wks between each shot so if you are planning on doing both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines you should get the seasonal vaccine now so you can space them out.  If there is a 2nd dose of H1N1 necessary, you will need to get that about 1 month after the first H1N1 shot.  You should have your two toddlers get the seasonal flu vaccine as well.

  • I'm still waiting on the word from my doctor.  His office hasn't officially made a recommendation yet.  I'm hoping to know at my next appt.  I'm due in December and I'm a teacher.  I'm always around sick kids in the fall/winter.  I don't want to get sick!
  • Doesn't sound like a second dose will be necessary for the H1N1 vax.  However, it does sounds like the vax supply won't be available until after the peak.

"On Thursday, federal officials reported that one dose of the new vaccine, rather than the two they had expected, appeared to fully protect recipients against swine flu. They said that meant there would eventually be plenty of vaccine for everyone given first priority for shots: health care and emergency workers, pregnant women, everyone ages 6 months to 24 years, adults up to age 64 with medical problems, and people caring for infants under 6 months old.

The officials expect about 50 million doses of swine flu vaccine to reach government warehouses by Oct. 15, and 20 million more to be ready each week after that until 195 million is reached.

Then those lots must be shipped to health centers, schools and other vaccination sites, people must be injected, and each must develop immunity. Immune responses are different in each individual, but the clinical trials suggest that most will be protected after 8 to 10 days.

So if the epidemic?s peak comes in late October, millions of people are likely to catch the flu before the vaccine is available."

  • My doctor strongly recommended both the flu and H1N1 shot...but told me NOT to get them anywhere other than their office. They will have the thermisol free shots for pregnant women.
  • I was given the reg flu shot at my appt last week. I also got a script for tamiflu in case I start having flu symptoms prior to getting the h1n1 shot. I am nervous too but after speaking to my dr. I feel a bit better. The changing factor for me is when he said I will have a newborn in dec and I don't want to the baby to get it.

  • I just got the flu shot-the one that is recommended for pregnant women, not the nasal spray. My doc also recommended the h1N1-so I will be getting that when it comes out. I work in a school and volunteer at a hospital so...I need to be protected!
  • My OB said H1N1 shot is in fact in two rounds.
  • I'm getting the regular flu one now (probably next week) and then will get the H1N1 when/if it becomes available.  My girls are in preschool so they bring bugs home with them all the time.  The earlier the better for me (and them) to get the vaccines.  (FWIW, they have both got the regular flu shot last week and will get the H1N1 shot if/when they can.)
  • I am getting both as soon as avaliable to me.

  • I'm really not 100% sure about this H1N1 shot yet.  I did get the regular flu shot; however, pregnant women have been getting that for quite some time now.  We'd be the guinea pigs of the H1N1 (along with your children)- THAT is what concerns me.

I've also gotten mixed messages from different physicians as to whether a perfectly healthy pregnant woman (not otherwise immunocompromised) really needs to get the shot.

I'm going to try to continue to do some more research and put a lot more thought in to it; however, I do not want to compromise the health of my LO either.  ???

  • I am getting my flu shot next week because they give them at work for free and I am in a high priority group (I work at a hospital). I will get the H1N1 shot as soon as it is available to me at work.
