DS is 17 lbs 4oz as of Tuesday which is less than 5%. He is a peanut! People always come up to us and ask how old he is and when I tell them they say "WOW, what big baby" or "You have a future linebacker on your hands!". I know people who are not around babies generally have no idea the average size of each age and just say the first thing that comes to your mind. I just want to say acutally, he is not a big baby and quite the opposite! I don't really think this post has a point except people generally say such annoying things when it comes to babies. If your little one is small for their age do you still find people saying they are big or am I the only one?
Re: If your LO is a peanut
I have a wee one too. I find people who don't know about babies always say things like, "What a big boy!" But people who really do know babies guess that he is like 3 months old, and then they see him sit on his own and are amazed!
FWIW, he's about 14lbs and 6 months old. He was 5lbs 5oz at birth and he's been gaining well, but he's still under 5%.
My kids are both tiny (both range between less than 0% and 10% on weight charts). I get comments all over the map. "Oh, they're so teeny tiny!" (fairly accurate!) but then someone else will say "Wow, they're so big for their age!" (not even remotely accurate). Most people have no idea.
It's the same with pregnancy, though. I was HUGE (even my midwife thought I was "extra big" LOL) and I got comments about how big I was (duh) but then people would say "Oh, my! You're so tiny! Are you sure you're X weeks??" They just dont know. They compare your 22 week belly to their co-worker who is 37 weeks or they compare your 17 lb 7 month old with their neighbor's 10 lb 2 month old.
I used to get that ALL the time too!
I have a long, skinny baby. From Dr. appt to Dr. appt he'll fluctuate between being 50% across the board to being 25% for weight and 75% for height. Oddly enough, people usually guess his age within a month one way or the other.
I was really bad at it myself before I had a baby though. I ran into a former classmate about a year ago and asked how old her baby was, guessing 9 months. She was 18 months, and not that small for her age. I'm getting better.
