Babies: 9 - 12 Months

The pedi chastised me (long)

I took Mo today because he's had diarrhea for a few days.  He's okay, and it's just a little bug.

I saw a different pedi in the office because my regular guy was booked.  He asked if Morgan was eating stage 2's.  I told him that he didn't eat solids at all because he hates them and that my other pedi said not to rush him.  Apprently I'm doing my child a huge disservice.  He also said I'm feeding him too many bottles (5 6-oz in 24 hours)

So I sit here now trying to get Mo to eat some cereal mixed with applesauce (it's binding).  He gags as the spoons nears his faces and then spits it all out raspberry style.  Freaking frustrating.

Oh and I'm only supposed to give him gatorade and water and one bottle of formula in the morning for the next 24 hours.  Grrrr, this should be a fantastic weekend.

food is still about learning at this point... if he is still spitting it out, he isn't ready...

GATORADE? for a baby? that sounds ridiculous. I'd try oatmeal. For some reason J hates baby rice cereal but loves baby oatmeal. He sounds like an asshat. Sorry, mama!

H said pedialyte and gatorade are the same thing.  I'm pretty sure he's right.  He said he needs the sugar because he's losing so much through pooping.

    I'll try the oatmeal : )

  • Aw poor mo. You're not doing him a disservice. Max didn't like solids for about a month. Now he inhales them. He wanted them so super runny in the begining and we're Still at a stage 1 consistency. Don't sweat it. Why Gatorade and why not pedialite? Hugs mama

  • I would go with the first pedi's opinion, personally. He might not be ready, everything I read says you shouldn't base the time you start solids on the calendar. In a few weeks he might take to them fine.  You're the mom you know what's best.

Yes ma'am!  What time do you want to meet?  I was thinking starbucks first and then walk the lake?

  • Hope Mo feels better soon. What about trying some bananas with the rice? That should digest pretty easy.
  • Did you tell the pedi you have been giving him table foods?  I thought purees weren't necessary.  If I were you I would trust the opinon of the pedi you usually use.  Oh and Jonah takes 4-5 6 oz bottles in 24 hours and my pedi didn't say anything.  Odd....anyway I hope Mo Mo feels better.

  • DD hates rice cereal too.  I was actually just going to post a poll (I still might) to see how many babies actually like rice cereal.  I think I might try carrots or something else this weekend.

  • Do not listen to that pedi.  I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be giving your LO gatorade.

Do pedialite if it's for the electrolites - gatorade has so much crap in it - food dyes, sugar, etc.

Also, my pedi is just fine with me holding off on solids until one year.  David is 7.5 months and has never had anything other than breastmilk.  He nurses 8 times a dat and gets anywhere from 4-7 ounces each time (different amounts from when I have pumped).

Page SapphyrEyes of EFF - she delayed solids until a year too.  Her baby is perfectly healthy.

That pedi sounds like a tool.

  • I'm also curious what the disservice is?

I've tried almost every puree, he doesn't discriminate he hates them all!

  • I'm sorry about the frustration, but so happy it wasn't anything serious. Your post this morning had me worried.

SOmething about how he shouldn't still be waking for a bottle, blah, blah, blah, how he's way behind other kids at eating meals, blah, blah, blah.

I knew you ladies would set me straight.

He told me I was fired because I wasn't giving him the proper dosage of tylenol for his teeth.  I guess I'm supposed to give him a dropper and a half because he's over 20 pounds.

our ped encouraged solids at 6 months due to the development of the muscles used in eating versus swallowing.

  • Sorry you got such horrid advice.  Your baby is only 6 months old - totally normal for him to not eat much if anything.  Kiddo hardly had any solids at 6/7 months.

I'm no pedi of course but with-holding his formula doesn't sound like a good idea.  And gatorade???

Now I see this and think he's an even bigger asshat - really??  I'd hate to know what he'd say about my 8 month old who nurses multiple times a night and is just now thinking about 3 meals a day (something by the way that my pedi was totally fine with).

And you were "fired"??  Some personality this guy has.

  • Don't worry ladies I would never not give him a bottle if he asked for it.  It might put some rice cereal in it tonight though to help bind his poop.

I have heard of the diluted gatorade....pedialyte thing- but luckily have not used either.

I'm sorry that happened.  My ds is the same age and is similar in size to M.  He still gets 5 6oz bottles a day (plus 3 solids meals) and he wakes to eat at 4am.  And we only switched to a full dropper of tylenol at 6 months.  I wouldn't let that pedi make you feel bad.  Trust your usual pedi.  I've seen several at our office and some I like and others I will try not to see again.

    He was quite abrasive.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it

  • My pedi said Gatorade has a lot more sugar than Pedialyte, and it is too hard a load on LO's system.  I think watering down Gatorade helps, but my pedi said just use Pedialyte.

As for solids, that's just BS.  Some babies aren't ready until even closer to a year.  BM or formula should be the main source of calories/nutrition until 12 months anyway.  "Solids" are just about practicing, and some kids like the variety, but not all are ready.  And most baby food solids are pretty low in calories and offer minimal nutrition, because they add water to thin them.

That pediatrician sounds kind of old-school and out of the loop to me.  And he should never make you feel bad about the choices you know are right for your child. Good thing he's not your regular.

Hope your LO is feeling better soon!

  • WTF? He's only 6 months old...DD drinks 32-37 oz of EBM every day and hasn't yet started on solids. The pedi practically kissed me when I said that we were waiting until 6 months to start. DD also eats, generally, 1X at night (3 or 4 AM although last night she skipped it). This pedi sounds like a dumbass, but more importantly, I'm sorry that your LO isn't feeling well!

    Oh geez.

In every third world country mother BF until children are toddlers.  Their children don't eat solids when they are this age because they can't afford to feed it to them.

Yet somehow once the child weans it learns how to eat on it's own.

That's the biggest load of bull I've ever heard.

You're right, Gatorade and Pedialyte are the same thing but it's odd he didn't suggest Pedialyte..I mean it comes in more baby "friendly" flavors and in smaller portions. I would be so quick to think you're doing anything wrong. Like the others said, he may not be ready for solids yet. And I think the amount of bottles you give is just fine - they need their bottles to get their daily nutrient intake, not from solids

  • I'm late here and I hope you still see this. I wanted to share that my DD completely REFUSED solids until she was 11 months old. And I tried... oh, did I try. She eventually started eating Gerber Puffs, but it was essentially just breastmilk exclusively for 11 months! She eventually just started eating table foods, and does just fine now (at 16.5 months). I guess she just wasn't ready! As worried as I was at the time, I'm almost sort of glad in hindsight. She has several food allergies, and it's almost like she knew instinctively that it would be better for her to wait. Sounds weird, I know. Anyway, your pedi is nuts, if you haven't already gathered as much.
  • Mama as others have said this guy is a lunatic.  No to the gatorade, yes to the pedialyte. We just a month ago started Brendan on solids at 14 months (11 months adjusted for preemie) and is eating like a champ now. We tried at 6 months and it was miserable for me, him and my husband. If you want to wait, wait...he's your baby and it's your choice. Please don't let this guy bully you.  You are doing a great job!
  • My sister didnt give my niece solids until almost 9 months (she tried off and on but my niece had no interest and ended up having different allergies) and she is 18 months now, perfectly healthy and a good eater. I would follow your gut.... If you are going to try to get him to take solids I strongly suggest Sweet potatoes, they are easy on the stomach, sweet and yummy! Plus I hear some babies will never like oatmeal or rice cereal... why not just try the veggie first, then once he starts to like that add in a little cereal if you really want him to be eating that....
