3rd Trimester

Work, when is it a good time to call it quits?

I am 27 weeks prego and i'm not sure when its a good time to let my boss know that i'm leaving.  I'm not planning on coming back to work since i don't have a babysitter.  I would love to work part time from home but not sure what's out there. Due date is Dec. 11, when should I call it quits?

  • I just found out that my work has planned my "maternity leave" for me. They knew I was pregnant when they hired me. I am a relief worker, so I just pick up shifts when they need someone. But I didn't know that two weeks before my due date is when they would stop asking me to work/scheduling me. I don't know if its my company's policy. I work with people with disabilities, can be relatively physically demanding and the house I work in only has one staff person on at a time. So, if I were to go into labor at work, it could pose a problem.

But I would definitely start talking to your boss about it.

  • I'm working up until 39 weeks, but would have loved it if today was my last day (37 weeks).  I still feel great but I feel like there's so much that I could be/want to be doing at home and work is just getting in the way of my nesting.  Plus, I am so looking forward to my week of down time in between work ending and LO arriving and know its a good possibility he can come a few ays early and I won't get that.  My theory on working so long was I'd be bored at home and time would drag, but if I could go back and do it over, I'd be done today.
  • I think it'd depend on your relationship with your boss, how long you've been there, what your responsibilities are, if you have to train someone, and etc. If it's something anyone can train someone on, I probably wouldn't worry about it too much but if you need to be there to see someone get hired and all that, I'd bring it up fairly soon.

Glad to hear someone is working so long too. I'm working til my 39th week also, only because I don't want to collect disability from the state, and my company pays 100% for 12 weeks and my year is at 39 weeks. I was put on part-time back in mid-July by my doctor, so hopefully it won't be too hard to work til then.

  • I'm working until October 2nd. I'm due October 16th. I really don't know if I'm going to make it though!!

  • I would work until your body tells you to stop! With DS, I was done at 27 weeks due to previa and anxiety! This time around, I am a SAHM, so there is no end/maternity leave!
  • Today was my last day of work too.  Woot Woot!!

  • I PLANNED on working up until I go into labor or until my due date BUT I am already having trouble keeping up at work. I hope I can make it !!!! We only have a enough in savings for me to take 9 weeks off so I don't want to start it too early before LO gets here cause that will leave less time once she's here.
  • I'm due Oct. 25th, and I was planning on working as long as I could.  Well, my school is looking for my sub now, and they are advertising the position starting on Oct. 12th, with them shadowing me the first weeks in Oct.  So now the idea of leaving a week or two early sounds delightful!  My poor body is already in so much pain at the end of a school day, so it'll probably do me good.
  • I plan on working until 39w. However I am cutting back my hours slightly at one of my jobs (currently I work ~33hrs/week at this one and its all on my feet), down to just 20 and picking up a few more hours at my other job (currently I work 4-8 hrs/week and its only half standing, half sitting) to still make it to almost 40/week till the very end. We'll see.
  • I had planned to work at the minimum up to my 36th week, but in the beginning told my boss I would work as long as I could stand it.  Well 26 weeks rolled around and I was in so much pain cause I was cramping so much that I went to the dr and they took my off work immediately for PTL.  I was standing on concrete floors all day will little movement and it was causing pressure on my pelvis which was causing pressure on the baby.  I kept myself super busy for the first 2.5 months, but these last 2 weeks I have been very bored! Now its a waiting game for this little one to make her debut!
  • My boss told me that I'm working until I pop.....lol which in a way is good I want to get in as much $ as I can.  But on the other hand I don't feel like having my water break while I clean some poor guy's teeth! They literally have me scheduled on my due date!
  • Most people will disagree with this, but I think ethically, the most professional thing to do is tell them now. They can't fire you and I think that waiting until after maternity leave is just not right. Some companies will still give you your maternity leave.
  • I've been here for 7 months, i highly doubt i will get maternity leave paid since I'm not planning on coming back.  I'm a receptionist/ escrow assistant. I pretty much sit all day, but my back is killing me from sitting so much. I do get up here and there to pick up faxes/ print outs or to make copies. I don't think I will need to train anyone but he will need to find a replacement. I know he will let me stay as long as I want but not sure how long or how early.
  • I actually asked my Dr. today and she told me to work right up until I go into labor, as long as everything is going well still. I don't want to start using my time until I have to. Two of my other coworkers said they stopped at 39 weeks and on of them wished she worked a little longer because she ended up being overdue. If I were you, I'd probably work as long as I could.

I have the same fear of my water breaking while I clean someone's teeth. I thought I was the only one. lol. But I am scheduled up to the day before my due date (it was the day of until they realized my replacement can't work Fridays and EDD is on a Friday.) Figured they had better cancel patients rather than risk no hygienist with a schedule full of them. lol.  I work 60 miles from home and hospital and OB has okayed work as long as a co-worker will drive me to the hospital if labor starts at work. Both dentists are okay with this, so I guess I will work right up until the end. More money for me!!! Big Smile

  • I planned to work until my EDD but changed my mind this week...I asked my doctor what he thought was best and he said at the beginning of last appointment we could decide next week.  By the end of the appointment, he said no later than 38 weeks.  If things look good I may try to stay to 39 weeks but absolutely no later.

  • I say you should take off at Thanksgiving. It's right around that time, and it will give you plenty of time to rest and do things before the baby comes.
  • I quit at 34 weeks. I'm a preschool teacher and just could not handle it anymore.
  • Today was my last day and it was time.  being uncomfortable there was turning me into a major *** which meant it was just a matter of time before I lost it on someone!
