DSLR owners...are any of you just "normal" photographers?

Or are you aspiring professional photographers?  Or were you "normal," got the camera, and then got interested in photography?

I want one, but I just want it for taking nice pictures.  No crazy editing.  Is it worth it for a novice who doesn't want to know the ins and outs of photography?

  • YES! ?WORTH IT! ?I have no professional aspirations, but I love love love taking high quality pictures of DS. ?I haven't even read my owner's manual because I'm not into all the special features- and it's definitely easy enough to just point, shoot, and get great images.

ETA: I have the Nikon D60 and highly recommend it!?

  • The Canon Xsi is a very user friendly camera (my hubby just got me one for my birthday). I haven't go to play around with it too much but I love it. You could also go with the Canon powershot (just a digital) if you want just a point and shoot camera.

  • I just got one and I am a normal person. I am not aspiring to be a photog nor I plan on doing much besides taking regular old pics. We got ours for free with DH's bonus program for work where they get points towards gifts though. I am not sure we would have shelled out the cash if we had to pay for it. Maybe further down the road.

  • I bought mine simply to take better pictures of Nick. Making the investment caused me to become more interested in learning how to use it and get the most out of it, but I'm still just a recreational picture taker. I don't have time to develop the skill, although now I would like to do more.
  • I am just a regular person who loves photography and is obsessed with cute pictures of her son. Yes get a DSLR. You will love it. The more you learn about how to use it, the better your pictures will be.
  • I've got a Nikon D60, and I'm not trying to be a pro. I just wanted faster shutter speed and more control than point-and-shoots could give me. If you get one, you'll love it!
  • Nowhere near a Pro here, but I love my Nikon D80 and it's 50mm f1.8 portrait lens. I cuddle with it and whisper sweet nothings into it's shutter button.

  • Ditto - normal person here. A few friends have asked me to take pictures of their kids, and I do that for them, but it's not like I'd ever be good enough to charge for that.

    LOL.. I'm similarly obsessed :)

I was "normal" though I did do some semi-professional photography back in the days before digital (yes, I'm that old!). Now that I've reignited my love, I do have some aspirations to get paid for photography - mostly to recoup som of my investment, photography is an expensive hobby!

  • I went to school for Photography back before the Digital Boom...and have been pro in some way, shape or form since...

but I have recommended DSLR's to family members (who have children) and they all LOVE them.  None of them are by any means anywhere near professional, but it has really improved the quality of their photos.

  • yes very worth it. I am very normal photographer mom... I have the Nikon
D40 and love it - super user friendly.

  • I just got the Nikon D40 and I love it.  Although I bought it because I am taking a photography class and I needed it for the class.  But it is very user friendly.  Although the more you learn about it, the better thet picutres will come out.

  • I love my Canon Rebel. Totally worth it. Not an aspiring photographer. I took a bunch of photography classes in college and HS. I have knowledge from them and know how to use an SLR (I have a pentax). It has helped me a lot to have that knowledge with my SLR but you don't have to have it. I say get one. I am sorry I didn't have one from the start. I got mine when she was about 4 months old.
