flying and ear popping

Perhaps a silly question, but I'll ask anyway.  My understanding is that the descent is the main concern for ear popping.  I purchased juice boxes for the daughter to drink during this time to help.  If she is sleeping, should I wake her to have her drink it or just let her sleep?  I just don't want her to be in pain.

Re: flying and ear popping

  • The ascent can cause it too...their ears are just like ours... :)  Mine pop on the way up and down.  So, I assume DS's do too.  The one thing that I've read and have practiced is to not let them sleep on the way down.  If she's sucking on a pacifier, then maybe she could get away with it, but if not...then I'd suggest getting her to drink something.  Good luck!

  • Have flown with DD 8 times.  If they are sleeping, they will wake up if it hurts but a paci should help prevent this.  If they are awake (like mine always is no matter what time), a drink or paci usually does the trick.  You just want them to swallow to release the pressure.
  • Just flew to Cali and back to Ohio with DD and she did fine. She did not fuss at all, and she has a cold and is teething :( I did give her motrin and tylenol for the ride home, but she was awake for all take offs and descents. I would not wake her if she is asleep! DD is not a big drinker either so I had her eat something ( cheerios) or she sucked on her blankie, but it was hit or miss and I really had no control over it. Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the tips ladies.  She has never taken a pacifier so I'll try drinks that she never/rarely has.
