3rd Trimester

S/O Cats

I've heard that lining crib, changing table, etc. with aluminum foil will help keep kitties off of these things. Anyone try this or anything else that works? I want to train mine not to jump on the baby stuff before LO gets here.

Re: S/O Cats

  • ive heard to do this though havent tried it/have no experience with it...

i dont have my kitty anymore to need to do this... :'(

  • I have two cats.  The aluminum foil works for one of my cats, but not the other.  I have lined our co-sleeper with foil and there is a nice impression of my sleeping cat in it.

We are going to try the double stick tape next.  Pet stores and Drs. Foster & Smith both carry wide double stick tape specifically for keeping cats off of things.  GL.

  • We're using the foil method.  It's worked so far.

  • We tried it and it hasn't worked.....  and I have INDEED caught the kitty sleeping in the baby's warm comfy cradle.  We shoo him out of the baby stuff (I've also caught him in the PnP and the Stroller, LOL!).  And he is learning that this stuff is not for him.  I haven't tried the crib netting they sell which seems like a good alternative.

All the while, he's getting extra love and attention from mom and dad so he doesn't rebel when baby arrives.  I've heard that a lot of cats like the stuff but once there is a baby in it they keep their distance....

     Good luck to you!

  • Rolled up packaging tape kept my cat off my dinning room table.

  • I've used the foil with success... if that doesn't work the tape method someone mentioned worked really well for a friend of mine
  • DH would love it if we could, but i'm not even gonna bother to try.
  • I have two cats and they both love the foil--the one scratches it and the other tries to eat it.  The double stick tape that I got at a pet supply place works so far.  If that doesn't work, I would try a scat mat.

    This

  • Sticky tape from Petsmart worked miracles with my cat.  Foil didn't phase her.  Only took one time in the crib and she hit the tape, and she hasn't tried since.  I'm also going to keep a squirt bottle in the nursery for "reminders" when we're in there.
  • I didn't do anything and my cats stayed away from DD. Now she chases them around and they still stay away :-) As soon as there was a baby in the stuff they left it alone

The thing about cats it they can get very resentful, and then they start crap where they pee and poop in places other than the litter box.

I didn't separate the cats from any of the baby's things. I also didn't "show" them the crib or changing table. I left the nursery room door open, and they were allowed to sniff around and explore. They never tried to go on the changing table or in the crib.

When DD arrived I let them sniff her whenever they wanted. They basically wanted nothing to do with her.

This is not really true.  They get stressed especially with big changes, and then improperly eliminate.  Feliway plugins and Rescue Remedy can help with this, as well as giving your cat a "baby-free" zone.   Pittieboo has a great blog and Bio you can check out about how to prepare animals for babies.

  • We tried everything with our cats and nothing! worked :( So DH built us a waist high baby gate with the middle rails the same width apart as the rails on the crib. It's wonderful! The cats don't jump over it and it swings completely open and closed with a simple little latch to keep it closed. Kitties can look in, but not go in :) And it looks good in place, too :)
  • We're installing a screen door at the nursery entrance to keep the cats (and dogs) out of that room.  It's the easiest solution we can come up with.  It will still allow them to see, hear, and smell what is going on in there, but keep them and their hair out of the baby's room.
