My 2 cents on the $1000/mo chick

The main issue I came away with?

She's paying less than $30 a month for auto insurance.  That means, shes got CRAP for coverage, and liability only.  So ... if anything happens to her car, she's SOL.  And if SHE caused a wreck, anyone she hurt or any property she damaged probably wouldn't entirely be covered either so THEY would be SOL and had better have good insurance themselves.

This is all coming from someone in auto claims though, lol.  It just seriously rubbed me the wrong way.  I find that so effing neglegent to ANYONE driving on the road with her.

  • You're right.  One place DH and I never skimp is on our auto insurance.  The chances of getting into an accident at any given time is just way way way way way too high.  Knowing you are 100% covered for anything that may occur makes for peace of mind on the road.

  • She said on her blog too how they have the 3 carseats in the back, and they just slam real hard...thats real reassuring, huh Indifferent
  • i see what you're saying, but at least she has car insurance. i think something like half the cars on the road in my state aren't even insured!

and while she probably has bare bones, she may not. dh and i only pay 84 and we have full coverage on one car and basic + a little on the second.

Yup, there are a lot of uninsured drivers out there, and it makes me sick.  And actually, there is no such thing as 'full coverage' ... and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There is ALWAYS more coverage available.

25/50/25 is the minimum liability coverage for the state of TX and is absolute CRAP.  If you cause a major accident this coverage is paying absolute jack squat.

  • Off the subject of $1kWoman, but, I have great insurance, got hit by someone with great insurance, and have still been fighting for 2.5 years to get them to pay accident-related medical bills. Effing insurance companies -- you get screwed no matter what you pay in premiums.

  • As long as she is carrying the required amount, I see nothing wrong with carrying limited insurance.  A lot of people do.
  • I know it sucks to get hit by someone with bear minimum. Been there.

But the people to pick the bone with are your state legislators if you think the bare minimum is too low. When I was poor I didn't skimp on my auto ins either but that is me many do and don't have the knowledge to know how bad it can be if there is a wreck.

Also at least she has car seats. At one point with the boys boosters and DDs convertible seat we had to give the door an extra hard push or "slam"` to get them all in. They were in fine and it was plenty safe. We did go out and get a 7 passenger vehicle but not everyone can. Plus it took us time to budget and find the right one.

  • Eh, ny ILs live in Maine and only pay about $360 per year for amazing coverage on two cars- it is a really inexpensive market. DH and I live in NYC and pay about $2000 per year for less coverage than they have (but still excellent coverage).
