3rd Trimester

just got back from worst doctors appt EVER... complications :(

ok, so im a first time mama to be, and maybe i'm just over-thinking this.... but i feel like the wealth of information i received from my doctor today is overwhelming, and im super upset and bummed. wanted to know if any of you ladies are experiencing MULTIPLE complication such as myself. so here goes my list:

1. failed 1 hr glucose test this a.m. (the least of my worries, but the whipped cream on top of my sh*t news sundae)

2. tested positive for GBS

3. both FI and i are carriers for cystic fibrosis, so LO has a 25% chance of having this uncurable, fatal disease

4. apparently i also found out that i have hpv... GREAT. im not too sure how this affects LO, but im sure it doesnt help my situation.

if i find out after my 3 hr that i have been diagnosed with GD, im going to scream and have a mental breakdown. i left the doctors office this a.m. and kept it together, but then broke down crying upset in my car on the way home. all i want is a healthy baby girl, and i dont understand why all of this is happening to me. i mean, i am doing everything "by the book" and have always been health as a horse! i just dont understand, and think its really unfair.

sorry to vent, and sound like a whiny little brat, but i just hate this so much, and want my baby to be ok.

anyone else dealing with this sh*t?

  • i am so sorry you're dealing with all this. let's just pray that you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy happy baby when it's all said and done.

  • Well the GBS is an easy fix right? Just some antibiotics, and you'll be fabulous. That's something to be grateful that they found because if your baby were born while you had this, it could cause serious complications.

But, the cystic fibrosis is a really scary thing. You just have to remember that there is nothing you can do about any of it until the baby comes. So, as hard as it is, try not to worry about it now.

The doctor didn't tell you any affects HPV has on the baby? I don't know, but that's definitely something I would want to know about.

    Good luck!

  • That is a lot to hear in one appointment. One bit of good news that I can tell you is that HPV will not have any effect on the health or wellbeing of your LO. I (along with 1/4 of ALL sexually active women) have HVP and my doctor has assured me that this will not hurt or harm the pregnancy or the baby.

     Keep your chin up.

  • I think it might help to visit the High risk board to get some perspective !. It is sucks when there a issues in a preganancy and the worry it causes really sucks! . We all want and pray for the same thing. Some of us are dealing with really really heavy Sh*t. GL
  • All of that really stinks!  My advice is to stay away from google as it will just drive you crazy.  Write questions down for your doctor for next visit and just focus on staying as healthy as possible.

  • 1. You could still pass the 3 hour, and even if you fail it, having GD isn't the worst news in the world.

    2. Again, not the end of the world. You'll get some IV antibiotics during labor.

    3. I'm sorry to hear this. Have you had a level 2 u/s? If so, were there any soft makers or indicators of CF? I know echogenic bowel can be a sign of CF - our daughter had this. If you are open to an amnio, you should be able to find out if your LO has CF or not. If she does, you will have time to prepare yourself, get a medical team in place, and learn as much as you can about the disease. More and more patients with CF are living into adulthood and having children of their own.

    4. Sorry about the HPV diagnosis, but it shouldn't have much of an effect on your situation.

Try not to be overwhelmed by everything. Focus on what is most worrisome - the CF carrier news. For me personally, I'd want to know if the baby had CF because waiting until birth would drive me insane. I'd also want to be able to find a pediatrician who has treated CF patients and look into the local resources that were available to me.  The rest of the news is not great, but in the grand scheme of things, I'd try to just let that all go and just deal with the CF issue for now.

  • The only one that I can speak to is #4.  I also have HPV as do the majority of adult women.  It's really no big deal and shouldn't affect your pregnancy at all.  It is just another reason to be very regular with your pap exams

  • That's a lot to deal with all at once.  Take your time to digest it and call your doctor to discuss any questions and concerns that you left unanswered.  I'm sure that I would have just wanted to get out of there and cry in your situation and may not have gotten all the information I wanted.

I'm surprised they even tested you for GBS this early, but it's not a huge deal and if they know you're + you'll get antibiotics to keep baby from picking it up during birth.

Do some research on CF.  It is a very scary thing, but it comes in many shapes and forms and with modern advances many people with milder forms go on to live long, fulfilling lives.  And there is still a 75% chance that your child will not have CF.  Are they sending you to a genetic counselor to discuss it?

Take the GD one step at a time.  Again, it's frustrating, but if you do have it, controlling it now will put you on the way to having the happy, heatlhy baby you want.

Good luck.  Check out the high risk/special needs boards for information.  I don't go there much, but you might find some good info there.  And none of these things is your fault.

***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • I'm so sorry for all that you're dealing with. But remember, LO has a 75% chance of NOT having CF!! Maybe the "glass half full" approach will help, as the odds are certainly in your favor.

Praying for you and a healthy baby girl!

  • I think almost all the responses are right on- I also have HPV and it is no issue for the baby.  Group B Strep can be dealt with through antibiotics.  And I hope you pass the 3 hour GD test, but try to remember that GD, though not fun, is treatable.  So three of those things on your list are very manageable and more common than you make think!

As for the cysic fibrosis possibility, why don't you call back you OB and get more info about any markers that may be detected.  It may be better to be well informed in this situation. I hope your LO is born healthy, but don't hesitate to ask for more information and follow up with the doc.

  • 1 & 3 suck. 2 & 4 are like you said. Cherries on top of the sundae. Two is not a big deal alone. Four will likely be handled as two is with antibiotics. I hope you don't have to deal with GD. I don't know what to say about three. I  wish you and happy and healthy baby sweetie.

I think your hubby should take you out for a fabulous dinner tonight...with a glass of wine. You need it.

  • Regarding gestational diabetes-- I failed the one hour test twice and then passed the 3-hr test. I'm convinced because I wasn't instructed to fast for the 1-hr that's the reason I failed and then "passed with flying colors." I've spent the past week completely stressed out about having GD and turns out I'm fine. I hope you get the same results too! My Dr. did say that anecdotally most people that fail the 1-hr pass the 3-hr. Just try to maintain a low-sugar, low-carb diet until then. As for everything else my best wishes to you--this is all a lot of hard work and stress isn't it?
  • Sorry to hear about everything I hope some additonal information and my personal experiences helps!

    1. I also failed the one hour glucose test and was borderline for the 3 hour test. I completely freaked since I have none of the "typical" symptoms (high blood pressure, weight gain, over the age of 30)  and I really didn't want to go on insulin, but since I was borderline  the doctor just said "watch your sugars"  which is easy!

    2. GBS is very common. Your dr. will start you on an antibiotic medication by pill and then when you are in L&D they will have a antibiotic drip  on an IV. Most women do not transfer it to the baby but if it happens they put the baby on some antibiotics and all is well again. Have you had any yeast infections lately? It is common for the PH balance to become unstable causing an increase in yeast or in bacteria down there.

    3.  Just to help ease some worries one of my closest friends has CF she is 28 years of age and relatively healthy. She does breathing treatments every morning and is always in/out of Dr offices but with our modern medicine CF is becoming more sustainable and not the "death sentence" is once was 30 years ago. Also if you are a carrier for CF but do not have it genetically expressed you are 100% immune to ever contracting TB (tuberculoses)!

    3.  HPV is VERY common in women. Some statistics estimate 80% of women do or will have HPV. There is no risk to the baby but it does increase your risk of cervical cancer later in life.

I hope this helps calm you down some. I don't think it was very smart of your Dr to dump this much on you at one time- especially being emotionally pregnant- but sometimes they forget how emotional medicine can be for people who are patients and not doctors!
