Labor Prep -- TMI for some

I have read that some women administer themselves an enema before they go into the hospital for labor and delivery.  Is this common?  Does anyone plan to do this?

As vein as this sounds, one of my biggest fears is pooping there during labor .... not cute.  I, however, havent ever had an enema, I dont know if it would make things more likely to go awry?

I am going in for an induction tomorrow morning and so this has crossed my mind. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ladies :)

  • I haven't heard of women doing it to themselves, but I have heard of some hospitals offering it to their patients (optional of course).  I would ask your doctor or nurse about your options.

  • That was a fear of mine as well but TRUST ME, you are more concerned with getting that baby out and if you poop, so what. Its so common and they don't make a big deal of it at all. I think I did a little but I didn't even ask. After pushing for 3 straight hours, its almost inevitable, you are using the same muscles. Please trust me, you have bigger fish to fry when you are giving birth.
  • Indifferent...I have had an enema before....

    I say...poop on the table....

  • your body usually clears its self out on its own, but since you are being induced it might not.

tons of women poop, i wouldnt worry about it. whatever happens to you during labour, always remember that they doctors and nurses have probably seen worse!

this is what i've heard, too.

  • I couldn't poop the last two days and my midwife suggested an enema but did say it could possibly start the labor process. Sooo it could get things going. :) However, I was like you a reck about the thought of pooping during labor. It's really common, if it happens you won't even know it. I had no idea but later after the fact asked my husband, apparently I had. :( Gross.. however, you seriously have so much more on your mind that you don't even notice.

  • I really don't want to poop on the table-I send my husband to the opposite end of the house when I need to go-but I think I'll care less when I'm trying to deliver our baby.

  • At one point I was really concerned with this, but now I have much bigger worries (like my biggest is an episiotomy or tearing) so poop has moved down on my list. I told DH even if I do please lie to me and swear that I did not.
