Tips for cleaning up?

I am struggling to teach Eli to clean up his toys.  He is quite the little rebel since the baby has been born, and seems even tougher to get him to put his toys away.  Any tips for getting him to help out?  I hate to get mad at him for not helping, so we need some good ideas on how to make it fun.

  • I don't know where I remember this from but there was a song we used to sing

clean up clean up everybody everwhere

clean up clean up everybody do your share

  • I think thats from Barney...We have tried that song, haha.
  • I just remembered that we used to sing it at my friend's house. She had little siblings. I had no idea where it was from lol.
  • Can you try to make it a race, or see if he'll mimic you? We have started working on this, and some things he does better than others. Like he'll put his Little People bus and plane and bigger stuff in or on the toybox, but he has trouble not playing with the toys if I ask him to get the shapes for the shape sorter or smaller things. He also can't put his books away because as soon as he sees them, he wants to read them. So I just try to get him to put a few bigger things away and I figure I'll slowly add things.
  • Adding to rlthoms's idea - do you try just asking one thing at a time? That's been working really well for us lately, especially when it's a really big mess. If I ask her to pick up just the cars or just the blocks or just the babies, etc and it's a smaller task {note to self - I totally need to apply this to myself to get more done!!!} it seems more manageable for her and we get a lot less distraction going on.
