Any Arab-American moms out there?

I am so saddened today by the horrors of 9-11.  My heart breaks for the families who lost a loved one...

Unfortunately, this days also brings back memories of some of the horrific acts that were committed against innocent Arab-American families in the wake of the terrorist attack.  Arab-Americans that were harassed, attacked, and had their businesses boycotted or burned-down soley on the fact that they were of Arab heritage.  My family is from Lebanon, and I am saddened today not only by the memories of those who were lost, but by the things that were done to those of Arab heritage....

Anyone here of Arab descent who found they were treated differently / poorly in the wake of 9-11.  I cringe at some of the things that were said to me and around me (some of those by people who did not realize I was Lebanese, and therefore felt I would join in on the ethnic bashing.)

Just curious...

Re: Any Arab-American moms out there?

  • a family in my town that operates a gas station got their car smashed by some rednecks on 9/11....only problem was the family was INDIAN.

ETA obviously not the ONLY problem, but you know what I mean. It shouldn't happen at all.

  • Yeah, everyone within a certain skin tone range was getting the side-eye.  It was awful, even in uber-liberal San Francisco.
  • DH is North African/Jewish (although people think he is Lebanese all the time as his last name is a pretty popular in Lebanese/Palestinian Christian last name) we don't live in the states but I completely understand what you mean.  It is really sad how judgemental and stupid people can be.  It was terrible right after 9/11 and it is still bad today.
  • That makes me so sad...first of all, people can't tell someone Indian from someone Arab?  Geez....second, no one deserves that kind of treatment.  There were many Arabs that were killed in the attacks...

I felt like I had to reiterate to certain folks that we didn't condone terrorism.  Of course we don't condone terrorism!!!  My God, my parents were born here - and let me tell you, I'm just as scared of terrorists as the next guy!!!

Thoughts and prayers with everyone who lost a family or friend that day.

  • DH's aunt married a man from Palestine right after the 9/11 attacks happened.

DH's family has pretty much shunned her, although they like to pretend that they are civil. The way that they mock her and her family is disgusting to me. Lili will probably never know her two cousins because they all live overseas and never come to visit.

She converted to Islam, and that just about gave DH's grandparents heart attacks. His family makes jokes about terrorists all of the time. DH is the only one that doesn't join in.

It makes me sick. Absolutely sick.

  • A local mosque was vandalized the day after the attacks - so sad that people are so ignorant. I'm sorry for what you and your family had to go through.

  • One of my best friends who is like a sister to me, her family is like my 2nd family is from Iraq... she has told me many stories of how she was yelled at by strangers and that her dh would not let her wear hijab so she had to wear a baseball cap instead... and this is in california.. I was living in western Colorado at the time and would hear many people at my work use slurs.. it was so bad that I told her not to come and visit me because I was scared for her safety.
