This isn't a critique per say, since internals really are a personal decision & some women feel "empowered" by knowing how dilated/effaced they are. If that's your cup of tea, then awesomesauce.
But just as an observation of the average, those that get internals starting early seem to be the ones that go slightly (or more than slightly) BSC after being full-term, including eviction notices at 37 weeks or rants about their doctors being "douchebags" when they're still pregnant at 39 weeks because BY GOD, they were 2 cm at 36 weeks!
Maybe this is more a friendly PSA that when up against birth & nature, your doctor has the prediction powers of Miss Cleo.
That's all.
eta disclaimer: not all who get internals go bsc. but there is a slight pattern, especially among those that do not post often.
Re: An observation. Not a judgment.
I agree.
This is why I declined an internal on Tuesday. The doc told me Trent is 2/3 of the way down which already threw me into a panic. If I had actual numbers and progress to have in my mind I would be insane.
agreed.
As much as everyone here would like to go a little early, it is still usually best for the baby to remain "in" for the full 40 weeks.
I'm not sure how my OB feels about internals, but they seem to me to just raise a lot of false hopes.
~*DUE MARCH 5th 2014*~
I definitely like knowing how much progress I'm making! I've got an induction scheduled already (excessive amniotic fluid = risk of cord prolapse), and I'm definitely crossing my fingers that he decides to come on his own before then.
I rather like that after doing my internal yesterday, my Dr said "You've made good progress but it's not like the numbers really mean anything about how soon you'll go into labor. I could see it being in the next week, maybe. You can try the usual suspects.. spicy food, eggplant parm, get out and walk a lot, sex (if you feel like it at this point)..."
LOL A balanced dose of hope and non-committal.
I get them but I'm not one to complain about being done with it. Even with my twins, I went 39 weeks and loved having them inside me cause I knew once they were out, I'd miss feeling them in my belly.
Note: I didn't know you could opt out of an internal? I thought it was something you had to do.

yeah, dude. Easy as pie. I just told my doctor that unless she found it medically necessary, I did not want an internal.
She actually thanked me for it.
I had to get them because of a history of early issues from DS#1. It was more of a precautionary thing to see if I needed an U/S to look into things further.
To me it's like any other bit of information throughout this whole thing. I do think it's "funny" when people whine about no progress at 37 weeks or how they were 1cm at 36 weeks and just can't believe they haven't progressed further by 38 or so.
I really like the way my doctor handles it -- she does the internal but doesn't say anything more than "You're just where you should be for XX weeks."
Yeah I got checked at 36 weeks and not dilated... same with my appointment yesterday at 38 weeks.
I was slightly disappointed at my appointment yesterday because I'd been having really nasty menstrual like cramps and just hoped something had come of them... nope! However, I'm not ready for this baby to come until her due date, so I should probably be happy!
Also, part of the reason I got an internal at 36 weeks was I went on a vacation that weekend about 3 hours away - my doctor just wanted to make sure I was reasonably closed before approving the vacation. Then I was just curious yesterday so I agreed again. I guess once you start, you want to know every appontment.
