How can I get DS to stop this?

This is driving me crazy - DS kicks our dog.  She (the dog) is only 12lbs so she's small and low to the ground = an easy target.  I know he is doing it mostly for the reaction, either the dog or ours, but since its not something I can ignore I'm not really sure what to do.  So far I've tried time outs, removing DS or the dog from the area, explaining that it hurts the dog and makes Mommy sad (DS is only 23mths), taking away what ever toy DS (or dog) are playing with, I'm not getting anywhere.  What would you try?

I do try to catch him before he does it, but I'm not always fast enough.

  • Are you against a little swat on the butt followed by a time out if he does it again?

And, how does the dog react.  Does she walk way, look annoyed, about to strike back?  I would not leave them alone together because you never know with a dog. Famous last words are "my dog would never, bite/attack". If I were being kicked I may snap one time too!

    Best of luck!

  • I think I'd probably make such a loud gasp that my kid would be terrified (this might not be the best thing to do but that would probably be my instinct) and then without saying a word I'd put him right into his room for a LONG time out.  That could really hurt a little dog.  :(

To keep your dog safe, I'd start keeping them apart with gates.

The dog usually walks away or I will pick her up to move her, but I would not assume she wouldn't snap at him.  Thanks for the reply.

  • dd went through a phase of being mean to the cat (probably about the same age)...we would show her (we pet cat and hold her hand and gently pet the kitty) how to pet the kitty nicely (and really talked it up)and if she showed any agression toward the cat we would move dd away and then be affectionate with the cat.

thankfully the stage didn't last long.
