3rd Trimester

My first internal was REALLY painful!

I know I've seen some ladies post how it was "sort of" uncomfortable and I've seen some say it hurts. I was not expecting to be checked at all and let me tell you it was really painful! I had cramping for 2 hours after and it hurt to walk for a good 4-5 hrs after...

I'm guessing my pain tolerance is now really low! Thank god my midwives don't believe in checking you constantly once you're in labor...

  • Oh goodie!  I have my first internal today, I've been kind of nervous about it and this post does not make me feel better!

  • It totally depends. I've had 3 and each were different. Yesterday's was probably the worst but she warned me since my cervix was totally soft it was likely to be. I took 2 tylenol and spent the afternoon walking and by dinner (after the tylenol wore off), had no issues.

  • for those of you that are nervous, why don't you decline?
  • I agree that they are painful.  I had my first yesterday and asked the doc how far up she was reaching.  I was incorrectly picturing something like a pap.  She literally was in there up to her elbow.  Sorry if that's TMI, but I was shocked and very uncomfortable.  I probably won't turn them down at future appointments though because I do want to know if things are changing.

  • Mine were all very uncomfortable... the membrane stripping at the first internal put it in the painful category. The rest of the day following an internal I feel all crampy and uncomfortable. I actually had one yesterday and my vadge still hurts a little Tongue Tied That said, its 50/50... some women only have mild discomfort so don't get yourself worked up if you haven't had one yet.
  • I had one yesterday and it didn't hurt at all! Was a little uncomfortable but not painful. I expected worse.

  • My first internal with my son was really painful. I did pilates/yoga breathing for the rest of them without much discomfort. I think it was the shock and not knowing what to expect.

My first internal hurt worse than having my membranes stripped. I did the breathing for that too. I highly recommend using a breathing technique.

  • I like my warm fuzzy bubble of declining all internals.
  • For those who haven't had one yet, please remember it is different for everyone. Mine were awful. My OB is a man with large hands and he will shove the entire hand inside and move around A LOT!!!! I would bleed for 24 hours. That was it. I didn't have any pain or cramping after it was all done. My friends did not experience that, so like I said - it is different for everyone. I would still ask for another one on Monday just because I need to know my progress.

  • I had one yesterday and I didn't think it was that painful.  It was a little uncomfortable while she was doing it, but I didn't have any pain or cramping after.
  • and i found out i am 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced so it was worth it to me! (although, yes, I know I can stay there for 3 weeks so it doesn't really mean anything, etc etc...)

You just made me regret having a male OBGYN. Thanks...My first internal is today. Hopefully he doesn't stick his whole hand inside my vadge..He might get kicked in the face.

  • Sorry yours was so painful! For those that are nervous, just know that everyone is different. This is my second pg and none of my internals have been painful (just had my first internal with this pg last week). Uncomfortable, yes, but not painful. The membrane stripping is more borderline painful (imo).

  • As another perspective on internals-

My baby had been breech and when the doc felt the outside of my stomach she couldn't tell if he had moved. She did an internal and was 99% sure that the baby had turned head down so my internal was a great relief to me. Of course I got a sonogram a couple days later to make sure he was head down but it was nice to have some reassurance as a result of my internal. I had been really worried.

But if your internal is hurting then SAY SOMETHING. They will stop if you ask.

I never had any bleeding after but I go to a practice that is all woman docs so no one had huge hands!!

  • My first internal last week was uncomfortable but not painful, but my second one was yesterday and it hurt.  My first internal was with my OB and the second was with another OB in the practice and she pushed really hard (both are women).  I think it all depends on different factors, but one of them definitely has to deal with the doctor.  I didn't have any spotting with either one though.

I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you or anyone...it was just my experience. I do hope it is different for you. I like my OB though and would consider having him again for the next baby.  My advice is: if it hurts, just grit your teeth...it will be over in 15 seconds.
