I know I've seen some ladies post how it was "sort of" uncomfortable and I've seen some say it hurts. I was not expecting to be checked at all and let me tell you it was really painful! I had cramping for 2 hours after and it hurt to walk for a good 4-5 hrs after...
I'm guessing my pain tolerance is now really low! Thank god my midwives don't believe in checking you constantly once you're in labor...
Re: My first internal was REALLY painful!
yea the two internals i had were both really painful as well...
but it's a means to an end right!!!!
or something....
I agree that they are painful. I had my first yesterday and asked the doc how far up she was reaching. I was incorrectly picturing something like a pap. She literally was in there up to her elbow. Sorry if that's TMI, but I was shocked and very uncomfortable. I probably won't turn them down at future appointments though because I do want to know if things are changing.

My first internal with my son was really painful. I did pilates/yoga breathing for the rest of them without much discomfort. I think it was the shock and not knowing what to expect.
My first internal hurt worse than having my membranes stripped. I did the breathing for that too. I highly recommend using a breathing technique.

You just made me regret having a male OBGYN. Thanks...My first internal is today. Hopefully he doesn't stick his whole hand inside my vadge..He might get kicked in the face.
As another perspective on internals-
My baby had been breech and when the doc felt the outside of my stomach she couldn't tell if he had moved. She did an internal and was 99% sure that the baby had turned head down so my internal was a great relief to me. Of course I got a sonogram a couple days later to make sure he was head down but it was nice to have some reassurance as a result of my internal. I had been really worried.
But if your internal is hurting then SAY SOMETHING. They will stop if you ask.
I never had any bleeding after but I go to a practice that is all woman docs so no one had huge hands!!
I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you or anyone...it was just my experience. I do hope it is different for you. I like my OB though and would consider having him again for the next baby. My advice is: if it hurts, just grit your teeth...it will be over in 15 seconds.
