video monitor or angelcare?

Emma may be coming home very soon and I had originally wanted to get a video monitor, but now, I am not sure if I should get an angelcare instead.  Which one do you use, or do you have both?

  • We have the Angelcare and absolutely love it.  Since DS had problems with bradys and desats it really gives me peace of mind.  Some people have problems with false alarms.  We have had one... when I went in his room, he was curled up in a ball in the corner of his crib so the monitor just wasn't picking him up.  You can adjust the sensitivity so I would think that false alarms wouldn't be a big issue if it's adjusted correctly.  If you do get an Angelcare just make sure you test it with everything in the room exactly as it will be when LO is in there.  We tested ours with the ceiling fan on low and the monitor picked up the fan.  So, we had to adjust the sensitivity for that.

  • We have the angel care deluxe. I am so-so about it. We had the original, and when we did not have the parent unit on it worked GREAT. The minute the parent unit was it it was non stop buzzing, so I returned it and got the deluxe.

With the deluxe I have not been able to get it to a point where it will not go off when DS is swaddled. I have stood there and watched it go off even though I can see him moving/breathing. I know this is just something I need to test and figure out, but it was been over 2 weeks and I cannot get it right. So right now, I am annoyed with it!

  • I would take the angel care before a video monitor if I had to choose.

We basically use both. Not an angel care, but we still use his apnea monitor at night, so it functions the same way.

  • We have a video monitor and we use it now that DD is in her crib. While she was in our room we didn't use anything. I looked into the angelcare but was afraid it would drive me crazy with the false alarms. Now that DD is in the crib on the other side of the house, I LOVE having the video monitor even though I was so-so about registering for it.
  • I didn't have either for DS, but would choose a video monitor if I could do it over.

  • I love the angelcare - i wouldn't be able to sleep without it.  We don't have a video monitor, but my son's crib is in our room, so we don't need one yet.  when he moves to his own room (which will be when he's 15 if it is up to me) we'll probably get a video monitor as well.  I like the angelcare for the movement sensor, I don't really use the sound monitor that much.
  • We have the Angelcare and love it.  I honestly don't think my DH would have slept at first if we didn't have it (and maybe not even now).  We have had one false alarm in over a year of using it.  We are still using the movement sensor even though DS is now over 15 months. One of the NICU doctors had an Angelcare for his (full-term) baby, and he told us it's actually a better apnea monitor than the one they send babies home with.

  • We bought a regular baby monitor, which worked just fine with sound only. But, about a month ago we invested in the Angelcare.

I have to say that I was skeptical at first (with lots of reviews about false alarms, etc), but I really think you just have to get the sensitivity right. Our DD is a very sound sleeper, so a video monitor wouldn't have done much for us. We haven't had any false alarms with DD in her co-sleeper with the Angelcare - only false positives with the fan triggering the movement. So we've had to mess with the sensitivity to get it just right, but I really have peace of mind about it now.

  • angelcare!

i know lots of families that have had them, several have had ligitimate alarms that saved baby's life. none of them have complained too much about false alarms.

i know my sister accidentally set my nephew's off a few times by forgetting to turn it off and picking him up.

the metronome is the only thing that will let me sleep! if i had a video monitor i'd stare at it until i scared myself into going in to actually check on her. :)
