Texting while driving

So, I have seen the video and the very graphic email about what can happen if you text and drive.   I heard from a friend (and I have no idea if this is true or not), that they are coming out with a new Blackberry that will not let you text if you are going over 10 mph. If you receive a text, your phone will automatically notify the person who texts you, that you are driving and will get back with them when you can.   Like I said, I really have no idea how much truth is in what she told me, but I think it's brilliant. Just wondering if any of you heard of this?

Re: Texting while driving

  • I doubt it's true.  But I WISH it was!!  I can't even count how many times I've almost been hit by someone texting.  Seriously, just CALL the f-ing person you're texting.

  • Bnljane, I thought the same thing... that just doesn't sound right, but who knows. We got hit by a young girl texting with both my kids in the car this summer. We were on our way to have a fun day at the lake, little did we know.

  • So I take it that means if it is true and you were a passenger in the car you couldn't text either?

That is going to mess with a bunch of teenagers. What are they going to do when they are in the car with their parents?

I can't use a lot of the features of my GPS if the car is in motion. If Wes is driving and I am a passenger it is suuuuuper annoying. I think if it senses a passenger it should let you do it.

  • Maybe I'm just being "devil's advocate"....or, maybe I'm really sick of almost being in accidents and knowing people who have been in accidents that could totally have been prevented.

what in the world did we do before cell phones, GPS, texting, etc...seriously.....people can't wait a few minutes to get to their destination, or pull over.......SERIOUSLY........what is THAT important?

ETA - DH texts while driving....he definitely gets an earful from me if I'm in the car.....what a pleasant experience for him....lol

AND, Jess, I totally know what you mean, when being the passenger and trying to use GPS/text, etc.......WTF...I'M not driving...that's why I'M operating the equipment, now LET me!

LOL, before GPS I would pull over and cry if I was lost and then call DH to scream at him for giving me sh*tty directions once again.

No, you are not the devil's advocate! They have got to do something soon! IDK what, but something! That's why I thought this new Blackberry would be so fabulous. Sorry, but you can still pull over and do what needs to be done.

  • I only text in the car if I'm at a stoplight.  If someone is swerving around while texting and driving, I lay on the horn.  Normally gets the point across.  Normally.

Btw the gps that is disabled- if it's an Infiniti or Nissan, there's a switch that can be installed to bypass that feature.  I also find it super annoying.
