DS will be 9 months next week and he now has his first diaper rash. I've been putting Aveeno rash cream on with every diaper change, but it seems to be getting worse. What really works?
Naked time always does the trick for Ryan but it depends on how messy you want to be. When Ryan was no mobile it was easy. I would lay him naked on a blanket with a few towels underneath and let him "air out." It gets trieckier though if you have a crawler and worse if you have a walker. It also does not work if diarrhea was the reason for the rash bc that is way too messy for me to handle
The last rash Ryan had was terrible and so we soaked in the tub in the tub 2-3 times a day with luke warm water and baking soda. It helped a lot.
As far as creams I have used Butt Paste, Desitin, and A & D and I think they all work the same and take at least a week to clear it up. GL. Diaper rash is no fun!
Marino just had the WORST diaper rash ever. That sucker was there for 10 days! It ended up being a yeast infection. Anyway, Butt Paste is the best for regular diaper rash. Marino had a bleeding rash in the NICU and that cleared it up in 2 days. They also had me use it on a bed sore in the hospital and it was better in just a couple days.
Is there an ulcer type of thing on his butt? If so, put Mylanta on it before the Butt Paste. It helps protect it.
If it gets really bad and turns into a million tiny red bumps, it's probably a yeast infection which will require an Rx.
For standard diaper rashes we use ButtPaste most days. But recently we've had a really bad case of super horrible welted and slightly bleeding rash and the ButtPaste wasn't it's usual wonderful product self. I splurged on a small tube of Triple Paste and the rash cleared right up!! We also are giving the boys about 10 or 15min of naked time after baths every other day or two.
Sometimes you just have to try something different.

you can also use Monistat cream or Lotramin (sp? The athletes foot med...) to clear a yeast infection rash.
We're just getting over a nasty one caused by a round of antibiotics. I ended up doing a layer of A&D, a layer of butt paste and then a layer of powder. Only use warm wash clothes to wipe with- no baby wipes. (they have alcohol in them and it burns) Try a few bath soaks during the day and as much airing out as possible.
wren has had some pretty gnarly ones during her time in the nicu... they used a combination of stomahesive and thick moisture barrier paste (by coloplast)... mixed with zinc oxide and nistatin powder (for the yeast infection part.) i'm not sure if you have access to any of those things- i haven't tried to find them...
in my research i did find that diaper rash is caused by a change in the ph on the skin. it's best to only wipe if he has a poopy diaper.( this grosses some people out, but urine is clean and ph neutral. and they're getting a bath pretty often anyway, right?
i actually ended up making my own wipes using viva paper towels, wedela calendula oil, lavender, and tea tree oil. but, if that's too hippy, you can always just use water.
Savannah actually had her first (mild) diaper rash the 2nd week home from the NICU. We gave her lots of naked butt time, making sure to use Desitin cream at every diaper and it cleared up within 3 days.
