Terrified about Liam's brain bleed

My son Liam was born last week at 31 weeks 5 days.  They did an ultrasound on his brain last week and it didn't reveal anything.  THey told me they would need to repeat this week to make sure they didn't miss anything because it takes about a week for the scan to be accurate.  They just told me that he has a small bleed, a stage 1 right now.  I am so worried and wondering if this is really as common as they say.  They also said his kidneys look a little dilated.  I am so scared and this is so hard.  I have never been through anything like this before and I am having a very hard time coping.  Please let me know if you have experience with these brain bleeds.

Re: Terrified about Liam's brain bleed

  • we had a grade two brain bleed which dissipated and is now no longer visible.  it is my understanding that minor bleeds generally resolve on their own and are not problematic.

  • I don't have any experience with this, but wanted to say good luck!  You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers!
  • I am sorry honey.  Stella had 3 brain ultrasounds during her 3 month stay in the NICU and I was always a nervous wreak waiting for the results (thank God they all came back normal).  From what little I have read on brain bleeds, stage 1&2 usually do not cause any long term issues.  Hang in there.
  • we had a right stage 3 and left stage 2. he is doing great now and they disappated after about 3 weeks. he will get one follow up scan before he leaves but i promise it isnt something that should be overly alarming. it is soo common but scary at the same time. just ask lots of questions and they will follow up to make sure it is getting better. his age is a great help. they say the younger the birth the harder the bleeds can be! good luck! and just remember that he can make it through anything!
  • Thanks for the responses.  I pray that it will resolve itself and that other ones won't crop up or that it won't get worse.
  • don't worry, ok? My ds (32 weeker) had a Level 1 IVH and bacterial meninigitis. He is fine, IVH was gone by 9 months and he is perfectly developmentally. Check out my blog - the guy is healthy, happy and doing great!
  • Brain bleeds are very, very common in preemies.  My son had a grade 1 on one side and a grade 2 on the other side.  It resolved with no problems at all.  Usually they only really worry about grades 3 & 4.

  • Savannah had a grade 1 on one side and a grade 2 on the other.  Both took care of themselves and went away.  I wouldn't worry about it.  Brain bleeds are very common in preemies.

  • Ditto everyone else -- Nicholas had a grade 2 IVH on one side and it resolved completely by the time we left the NICU.  We've had a developmental follow up, and the specialist said she will continue to monitor him for any asymmetry or other possible issues that could come from the bleed, but thus far, he seems to be doing just fine.
  • I'm a NICU nurse & can tell you as others have posted that grades I & II aren't as worrisome long-term. Serial head ultrasounds are done to follow up. The highest risk of bleeding is in the first few days...statistically it goes down from there so more than likely your baby's bleed will remain stable or start to be reabsorbed. GL to you!
